LAKE CHARLES, La. (KPLC) - Louisiana farmers and agricultural leaders are responding to the Supreme Court’s decision to strike down President Trump’s sweeping tariffs, saying the ruling leaves an already volatile industry with more uncertainty. Brandon Vail, a fifth-generation rice farmer in Calcasieu Parish, said the tariffs were necessary for domestic producers to remain competitive. “The countries that are exporting rice to the U.S., they’re not dealing on a level playing field with us,” Vail said. “Their cost of production is lower, and they’re heavily subsidized by their governments. So, you’re not comparing apples to apples with the rice that they’re importing.” Vail, who has farmed rice for 20 years, said the core problem for domestic rice producers is import competition.
“We have enough domestic production of rice to satisfy the entire domestic market,” he said. “But importers will pick up rice from other countries because they can buy it cheaper, and their markup is more — what they make.”

Michael Deliberto, LSU Louisiana Farm Bureau Endowed Professor in Agricultural Policy, said the ruling has left agricultural markets with significant questions. “When we have trade uncertainty that affects the demand for agricultural products, particularly in the export market, that puts a question mark over prices,” Deliberto said. “Prices for old crop — meaning the crop that a farmer has in the bins or a bale of cotton that may be in a warehouse — but then what is the next 2026 crop going to look like?”

Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry Commissioner Mike Strain issued a statement calling the ruling “very troubling.”

Farmers historically are huge fans of big govt and beg for subsidies

Reminder, it was FARMERS who were the first group to call for abandoning the gold standard. (William Jennings Bryan- cross of gold speech)

It was FARMERS who pushed the fed govt to buy their surplus crops at elevated prices and to enact parity pricing welfare schemes

We need food to eat and we need farmers to produce food. But farmers sure are a whiny bunch and continuously have their hand out.

I wish I could have gotten subsidies in my business.

Wish I had the answer for how to keep farmers in business without ongoing subsidies. Anyone bought tenderloin lately?

They do need subsidies, because if you didn’t they would demand higher prices. Which would increase the costs of food at the store.

Im not saying subsidies are a good thing, they aren’t. But we also can’t switch off subsidies due to market shock.

Subsidies also exist so the farmers do not over produce and floor the market. We want to maintain our production capacity so it is a necessity. That being said, open up new markets for these guys to sell such as Venezuela. In fact, do a food for oil program
