30+ year old 2 story home. I’ve got flexible duct work that needs changing. The runs in the attic to the 2nd floor are straightforward and self explanatory. My question is do I just change the runs going to the first floor to where they penetrate and put a fitting to join the new ducting as close as possible to the penetration? I’m assuming the vertical drops can’t be changed without opening up interior walls? The duct work running across attic is in pretty bad shape so I’d like to change as much as possible

Hard pipe with outside duct wrap is better than flex duct if practical.

Yes I understand that, it's not practical in this situation. My question is regarding the ducting penetrating and running down to first floor from attic. I don't see a way to change that without opening up walls.

If you have two units, your first floor unit should be first floor and 2nd floor should be in the attic? Why is your 2nd floor unit going to the first floor? Are you sure about that?

To clarify, I've got 2 units in my attic. One services the 1st floor with duct work going from attic penetrating thru and terminating at first floor (this is the duct work I'm questioning how to change). The other services the 2nd story with duct work going directly to ceiling registers in second floor ceiling (this duct work is self-explanatory as it's only horizontal runs across attic).

My question is how I change the flexible ducting servicing the 1st floor registers, it's dropping down thru the walls in most spots.

Use a fish tape type of set up to pull the new duct to the register.

I was thinking this but worried if I've got possible electrical or even an exposed screw/nail that would tear it. Also, would I be able to attach to the boot just by reaching inside the register.
