Owner of popular Houston radio station files for bankruptcy

The certain demise of mainstream radio and their pathetic "radio personality" staff is now here
quote:
Cumulus Media, the Atlanta-based company that owns 104.1 KRBE, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on Thursday, March 5, 2026, in the Southern District of Texas as part of a plan to restructure hundreds of millions of dollars in debt.
The company said the move is intended to reduce its debt while allowing its radio stations—including KRBE in Houston—to continue operating as usual.
"The prepackaged process is intended to address the company's debt efficiently with no disruption to our operations, our people, and our strategies," Cumulus CEO Mary Berner said in a Thursday statement.
If approved by a bankruptcy judge, the restructuring would eliminate about $592 million of the company's roughly $697 million debt, according to court filings, and transfer ownership of the company to its lenders.
Cumulus operates 394 radio stations nationwide, along with a radio syndication business and podcast network, and employs about 3,000 people.

Wasn't that the station that got rid of Ryan Chase?
FWIW, bankruptcy in Texas favors the filer - not the creditors.

Female CEO, Bankrupt company, shocker.

I didn't know KRBE was still around. They were pretty big in the 80s.

Guaranty just reupped with LSU sports, not that there was any competition
Their stations are safe as long as LSU doesn't bolt

That seems pretty extreme. Ditch 85% of the debt then turn the keys over to the creditors.
Wonder how many millions in bonus the CEO got last year while telling the staff to “tighten the belt” and “lean in.”

Yep. Was in Houston last week and caught part of “The Roula Show” with Eric. Did some investigating as I remembered the both of them from my time in Houston & sounded like Ryan went off the deep end.

Does Cumulus own 1310 The Ticket in Dallas? Edit, whoa they do.

Has a few stations in Lafayette as well.

Yes. I am wondering how this affects The Ticket in any way.

Cumulus is huge on the Gulf Coast. Quite a few stations in Houston, the Golden Triangle, LC, Lafayette, BR, and New Orleans are owned by them.
Posted on 3/9/26 at 3:47 pm to HoustonGumbeauxGuy
Damn I think all the major radio stations here are owned by them

90.1 is only music based station that is worth a damn
89.7 and 90.9 (fridays and saturdays) are good too
wish we could flip a switch and go back to local radio only.

89.7 Alvin Community College is awesome. When I'm in range, 103.5 in cypress is ok too.

Seems like that is precisely what needs to be disrupted, huh?

Pay me a few hundred grand and I’ll save you a frick load in like 5 minutes. This is ridiculous bloat in an industry that can be almost 100% automated.

Now the internet is finishing the job and taking television stations with it.

They rebooted the old 99X in ATL, and put it on 100.5 fm. Hired a lot of the old DJ's from the old 99X from the 90's, spinning 90's music. The best music station in Atlanta for people my age. I hope it sticks around.
quote:
99X on 100.5 (2022–present)
On December 1, 2022, WNNX dropped Elliot in the Morning after eight months.[16] The next day, at 5 p.m., after playing "Enter Sandman" by Metallica, WNNX dropped the rock format and began stunting with a loop of "Bitter Sweet Symphony" by The Verve, with sweepers stating "It's coming, same as it ever was. Monday morning, 6 a.m." The stunt was likely an allusion to the anniversary of a stunt pulled by former 99X DJ Sean Demery in October 1997, when he garnered local attention after playing the song in a similar loop shortly after its release. At the promised time, WNNX flipped to classic alternative as "99X”, marking the return of the 99X brand to a full powered signal for the first time since 2008. The first song on the revived "99X" was "Video Killed the Radio Star" by The Buggles, the same song that had launched the original incarnation 30 years prior. A letter on the station's website and Twitter page declared that the station's full-staffed launch had been set for January 3, 2023, effectively making the interim period a soft launch of the format; while there had been no official confirmation from Cumulus or the station at the time of launch, Cumulus hired several original station staffers for the station's new incarnation, including Steve Barnes, Leslie Fram, Steve Craig, Will Pendarvis, Jill, and Matt ‘Organic’ Jones.[17][18]
