We’re doing a European cruise in August and one of the ports is Marseille. I’ve not read great things about it, but have heard a lot of good things about Aix.

We plan to go to the markets and shops but it’s an 11 hour stop so we’d like to make a day of it. I’m considering chateau la coste but worried that’s too much.

So if you’ve been to Aix, what did you do/where did you go/how much time did you need?

I have never been but we have a river cruise scheduled for next year that goes from Provence to Burgundy and we are planning to spend a couple of days in Aix before the cruise. I have friends who have been and they loved it.

Aix has a great Roman coliseum, charming streets and a nice entry point to the south of France. Not far from lots of cool villages and great wine. And Avignon worth a visit.

ETA sorry missed cruise and limited timeframe. Think about 11 hours in Aix is sufficient to see the city without breaking a sweat trying to do other things.

Went to Aix last summer and its like stepping out into a storybook setting. You can access it by train from Marseille (we spent two days in both towns and wouldn't bother returning to Marseille, but are already planning another trip to Aix). Aix is very small, but unbelievably beautiful. Highly recommend that you take a walking tour with a guy named Benjamin to start. Will give you a complete overview of the town and you can decide what you want to explore further on your own. You can book a tour through his website, LINK
Also recommend going a few miles outside of Aix to visit one of the many lavender fields that surround the town. Accessible by taxi or a short city bus ride from the city center.

Pope palace is in Avignon.

Pont du Gard is northwest of that. Not terribly near Aix, but doable in an 11 hour stop if you rent a car.

I think you are thinking of Arles or Nimes. I’ve not been inside of the one at Nimes, but I’ve been to a bullfight at the one in Arles.

There’s some good stuff in Marseille. You can take a boat to the Chateau d’If - of Count of Monte Cristo fame. Not terribly exciting and much different than portrayed in movies, but I enjoyed it.

You probably can take a boat to visit the calanques from Marseille. Very beautiful. I’ve only done it from Cassis, but I think they leave from Marseille also. Beautiful.

Aix is a nice town. They have an art museum which had a Cezanne exhibit when I was there. Nice if you are into impressionists, but I don’t think it was a permanent exhibit, although he did a lot of painting in that area. It is known for its fountains. Has nice farmers markets and shops, but I’m not sure of what days/times for the markets (Saturday and Sunday morning for sure I would think).

There is a pretty well preserved Roman theater in Orange and many Roman ruins in Nimes.

LOL! If I may a little hijack of the thread for a moment. We’re thinking about that next spring as well except with AMA. Which one are you doing and what do you think about the itinerary?

It's been since 2016 since we were there, but we were in port in Marseilles from 800A to 500P and took a tour through Provence Connection Tours that included the market, wine tasting at a chateau, lunch, etc. I recall they did a good job.

We are doing the Viking Provence to Lyon river cruise. We are taking the pre cruise extension to Aix and the post cruise extension to Dijon.
We are looking forward to it because we have never been to those areas of France.

We are hooked on Viking but I have heard nothing but good things about Ama.

My plan is to arrive in Marseilles then Uber to Aix. Explore there for a bit then uber to chateau La Coste. Then back to the ship. There will be 3 of us.

Its about 30km so its doable by Uber but a little pricey. Downside to a train is you will still need a taxi or uber because the train station for Aix is too far to walk. Enjoy the trip - Aix is stunning.
