While Brazilian forces liberate the town of Montese, Italy, from German Nazi forces.

Talk about a blood bath. Marshal Zhukov was way too overconfident in carrying out a frontal assault against an entrenched enemy on high ground. The idea was to hit the Germans with a massive artillery bombardment then hit them with spotlights to blind them to the approach of the Soviet infantry and armor columns. Problem was, there was so much smoke and dust lingering in the air from the bombardment that when the Soviets turned the spotlights on, the light reflected off the dust and back at them.
The Soviets lost between 30,000-35,000 men trying to take the heights while the Germans lost between 40,000-45,000 (most of them captured), trying to defend.

Yeah. Day 1 was an unmitigated disaster for Zhukov. But he knew the German were scrapping the bottom of the barrel and all he had to do was keep battering away and their lines would collapse.

This is why I laugh when people think the Soviets stood a chance against the US Army in 1945 in the usual "what ifs". The Germans were on the verge of collapse. No fuel, limited ammo, no air power, putting boys and old men at the front; yet, they killed the Russkies by the scads. What would the US Army do with its advanced artillery tactics, overwhelming air superiority, command and control, and massive material and logistics support do to the Red Army? Vaporize it.

Steiner's assault will clear it up.

Patton thought we'd take the Russians, I think I'd agree with him.

I think most people realize if the US had thrown its full might at the Soviets we would likely win. The question/problem is did we have the stomach for it right after ending the largest and most bloody war we have ever fought. I highly doubt the American public would’ve been gung ho to fight the Soviets
It’s a lot different defending your capital city to the oncoming Russian hordes who are going to pillage your people vs sending Johnny from Omaha to the Russian steppes to fight

Obviously, political will is always going to be the limiting factor on any American military operation.

Russia wasn't concerned about losing soldiers. That trend continues today.

The MIC realized the $ they could make, and we haven’t “won” a war since.
