I want AI to take over all traffic light programming and timing

The people who do it in my area likely have drool falling out of their mouths.
What makes proper timing difficult?

You don't think forms of AI and algos are already involved?
Do you think it's Mark in the transportation office using a pencil and guessing?

The people in charge of timing are hired as favors to their smarter family members, and the trash collecting trucks aren't hiring just anyone.

Poydras St functionality is about what you’d expect out of New Orleans

Traffic patterns aren't consistent for starters.

The Japanese solved their traffic problems by studying mushrooms
We are too dumb to do the same

Everyone wants their signal for their movement to be longer than the other 6-10 movement at every intersection.
AI will eventually just kill the irrational complainers.

Oddly, I was just thinking the same thing this morning. Seems like it would be relatively easy to combine a camera with AI technology and change the light when there are no cars on the cross street but a long line backed up waiting for the regular light cycle to change.

Drivers. How are engineers supposed to account for the five second lag between the light turning green, and the first person in line even taking their foot off the brake. And then the driver behind them is similarly surprised by this shocking turn of events.
Then, you've burned almost 30 seconds to get five cars through the intersection, and the next light on the road is likely to turn yellow before those five cars will get through.

It would also be nice if bolts shot up from the street to prevent people from running red lights 2 seconds after they change.

What’s the proper timing sequence for the lights north and south of I-10 on highland, the light at Perkins and Highland, and the light at Perkins East and Highland?

I thought they only used it for trains, not cars

Don't forget the people that sit back a full car length away from the intersection when stopped at a red light, thereby not triggering the camera/sensor to know it needs to cycle the lights so that traffic can clear.
