We don't have a full blooded Scottish Terrier, but we do have a mix of one with a miniature Schnauzer. He's super smart and doesn't shed. You have to keep them groomed though. Their hair can get matted when it grows out too long.

If you get one, you have to name it Wallace or McDogle….

I did. It was my favorite dog. Mine was high energy in his youth. Very playful. Could be aggressive. You won’t have any rodents near your house if you get a good one.

My grandmother used to breed Scotties when I was growing up. They are good little dogs. Very smart dogs... They have huge personalities and are really active and confident so they can lean toward being stubborn. Theyre better with older kids, so if you have a toddler or a new baby, I would wait a few years.

^^^This. Those little bastards have an incredible prey drive. Theyre like rat terriers with a long wiry coat. Love to dig up critters.

My understanding based on the experiences of many friends and acquaintences who have owned those dogs is that they are overwhelmingly enjoyable dogs to own.

That's very high class in my opinion to own one, actually...

I love these dogs. Some characteristics, neither good nor bad:
- wire hair coat, not soft like schnauzer
- deeper bark than other small breeds
- not known as a people pleaser; independent, somewhat aloof with non family

Some cons to consider:
- will need grooming (stripping rather than trimming) or the hair won’t look right and will get gross
- suffers from skin allergies. Probably among the worst of dog breeds, so you might end up spending $$$ on cytopoint injections and medicated shampoo
- really large teeth. As mentioned above, they are somewhat aloof/ grumpy, so a bite is not out of the question
- like other terriers, they bark a lot

A very wealthy friend of my Grandmother had two, one black and one white. They were named Salt and Pepper. I met them one day on a visit to her home, and they remembered me for years even though there would be several months between visits.

You might as well get a cat at that point baw. I knew one that was social out of a few others. Like cats, they only want to bond with that special person and ignore everyone else.

A lot of these responses remind me of my first dog, a Westie. There’s not a poster on this board I wouldn’t shoot if I had to pick between my dude and them. Best damn dog ever.

Not a Scottie but They are very close in breed requirements. Wife and I got a Westie when we were dating. He passed last year at 16. Tough little SOB. Ran him over several times in golf cart. He'd get up and keep running. He didn't like men. Bit several men. Teeth/Jaws the size of a 40-50lbs dog. Killed 10-15 animals. (cats, woods rats, bunnies, opossums, even a big female coon). Coon tore him up pretty good but it was a kill. Usually with one bite and a bunch of shakes. Surprisingly a bad MFer. Fearless animal will not back down from anything/high pain tolerance. They are bred to go in a hole find a badger/fox, then try to kill it or subdue it until you dig the dog out. Their Tail is fussed together at the base so you can pull them out by the tail. (not sure on Scottie) So they are not cowards. Cool little dog. Very Smart but not really a biddable dog. I always said if you had 10 and ran a field there would be nothing left in that field with a heart beat. I think Id get another female but never another male. Gamey little dog with a Westietude.

All true. I’ve got two. Love them to death. Mine are phenomenal snake killers. As you said, WILL NOT BACK DOWN TO ANY THREAT no matter how big.
