White House wants nuclear reactor orbiting the moon by 2028

The Trump administration has grand plans for “ENSURING AMERICAN SPACE SUPERIORITY.” When NASA sent humans to the moon for the first time this century earlier this month, the organization made it clear that this is just the “opening act” for a new and revitalized era of space exploration. Under the Trump administration, NASA has enormous ambitions, going as far as to plan a permanent base on the moon, which will need never-before-seen energy innovations to maintain a secure source of power. This week, the federal government laid out its plans to achieve it.
The plan is to send a nuclear reactor into space. Last year, Trump issued a plan to install a nuclear reactor on the surface of the moon, but new orders describe a brand new vision. The April 14 plan lays out a mandate for NASA, the Pentagon and the Department of Energy to develop a nuclear system capable of orbiting the moon, and to have it launch-ready as soon as 2028.
To achieve this vision, NASA will partner with various agencies to fast-track mid-power fission reactor designs and surface power variants, which will compete to achieve near-term demonstration of viable models. “The White House’s overall strategy is to conduct parallel and mutually-reinforcing NASA and Department of War (DOW) design competitions to enable near-term demonstration and use of low- to mid-power space reactors in orbit and on the lunar surface, and prepare to deploy high-power reactors in the 2030s,” Interesting Engineering reported this week.

Let’s just slow down, yall.
Nissan cannot even build a transmission that can last 6 years and we are talking about orbiting the moon with a frikn nuke reactor?

Explain to me like I’m not a nuclear power expert nor a space travel expert, what will the power that’s generated be used for and if its to be used on earth, how will they get that power down here?

Loved Charlie Murphy. RIP.

Aliens say no way. Too bad, because there is no way we would frick that up.

How else do you imagine our laser cats having enough power to make it to Mars?

What a bargain we signed up for!!

it'll be like a giant battery charging station

NASA sent a communications satellite to space in the 70s that is currently leaving our solar system. I assume if Nissan had people that smart, they wouldn't be working for Nissan.

It should probably be on the moon and not orbiting the moon if that is the case.

They are going to resurrect the original Nikola Tesla (not related to Elon) and use his fanciful theories of wireless power transmission.
Or maybe just use a really long wire down from space.

Will this be its fuel source and will the US start mining it?
quote:
Helium-3 is the primary element on the Moon that is considered for use as fuel, particularly in nuclear fusion reactors, due to its potential for providing a clean energy source without producing harmful radiation or waste. It is believed to be abundant on the lunar surface, deposited by solar wind over billions of years.

We can build parts that last. We just choose planned obsolescence.

If it melts down we’ll have another Big Bang theory
Speaking of, what would happen if it did melt down in space? No gravity.

That's consumerism at its finest. They could make a car last 20 years, but then you wouldn't buy another car. Apply this to pretty much everything nowadays and you see things a little differently. Corporations are in the business of making a profit, re-purchase increases revenue and therefore, profit.

I'd assume predominantly military, government and "defense" resources, when it comes down to it... unless a permanent "lunar base" and military/scientific presence is expected to be implemented on the moon. In that case, I'd expect us to be mining the moon to see what valuable elements we could find and potentially extract.

The government stole Nicola Tesla's lifes' worth of work and research when he passed away in 1948. It's likely that they've been working diligently on his theories that power could be directly transferred wirelessly. I'd imagine that would be the only option aside from running giant, 30,000 gauge extension cords from the moon to the earth's surface.
This is all conjecture of course, but your questions are worthy of some response even if my response is totally far-fetched.

Trump’s uncle John got that research.
