Just talking LSU baseball.

I know it was 4-5 years ago but, when Johnson came to LSU, what pitching did he inherit? I know PM didn’t leave him much.

Well he inherited zero left handers if I recall which is pretty wild lol.

It was better than this. There weren't 59 WPs at this point in the season.

He had the kid from Rockmart, Ga. I think his last name was Floyd. The next year he got Skenes in the portal and they won the NC.

None.

Ma'Khail Hilliard and Blake Money threw on Friday nights.

Sam Dutton was throwing for about an inning at a time on Sundays.

Ty Floyd couldn't throw strikes, or really anything other than a fast ball.

Grant Taylor wasn't ready.

Devin Fontenot was still living off of an outing from 2019.

Gervase carried us late in games and Riley Cooper rubber armed his way through the season. Once Reyzelman found his grove, he got better, though he did cost us in the regional final by missing spots. Those were all guys Jay brought in.

PM left him with nothing.

Just go look at the roster. Ty Floyd, Devin Fontenot, Garett Edwards, Will Hellmers, Javen Coleman, Ma’Kail Hilliard were the main ones. It wasn’t great

Floyd wasn't Floyd at that time. He had zero feel for off-speed at all.

Hilliard went 7-1 in 2022.
Floyd ended up winning us a championship once he had developed.

Seems disingenuous to say he was left with nothing. I'm not going to argue the cupboard was full of all-star talent, but Jason Kelly did nothing with the pitchers here in 2022. I'll argue heavily that LSU doesn't win the CWS in 2023 if he was still our pitching coach.

Pitchers' W/L means nothing. Big fan of Hilliard. In no universe should he have been a Friday night starter in the SEC.

Yeah, and he didn't really develop until midway through 2023.

The proverbial cupboard was bare.

I don’t disagree. For comparison this is how he ranks alongside LSU’s current starters:

2022 Hilliard
Overall ERA: 4.56
SEC ERA: 4.38

2022 Ty Floyd
Overall ERA: 3.77
SEC ERA: 2.45

2026 Evans
Overall ERA: 5.47
SEC ERA: 5.94

2026 Schmidt
Overall ERA: 4.14
SEC ERA: 5.46

I think what a lot of people don't realize is just how much velocity has changed in the last couple years.

Eric Reyzelman was bringing it at like 96. Gervase hit 97 a couple times. That was elite in 2022. Floyd was getting by purely on 96 up in the zone. That wouldn't fly today.

Grant Fontenot struggles to get outs sometimes while throwing 100 in 2026. Those 88 mph FB from Hilliard would have been sent to the moon today.

Re: Evans - I've never seen a pitcher make every mistake count like 2026 Casan Evans. If a base runner walks, he is going to score. If a ball is put in play, it is going to find grass. He can't get out of his own way. Still, much more talented than Hilliard and is likely a top 3 round pick in 2027.

Re: Schmidt - I did not watch the game Saturday as I was at a wedding, so I can't comment on it. I saw he got roughed up a good bit. Most of this season for him has been 4-5 shut down innings. Then he runs into trouble somewhere around the 5th inning, often times through no or little fault of his own, and every one of the runners left on base are let in by whichever reliever comes in the game. I think he's a top 5 pick in '27. Super excited to see his junior season.

A decent amount of pitchers. But not a lot of good pitching. Ma’Khail Hilliard, Blake Money, Javen Coleman, Will Hellmers, Trent Vietmier (spelling?), Ty Floyd, there were a couple others, but I can’t remember.
