Charlottesville VA weekend report

Charlottesville is great. I’d never been there and we had a blast
Drove up Friday morning from Yorktown, the occasion to visit was Billy strings shows at the John Paul jones arena on UVA campus. There was a lot of other UVA related shite going on that weekend so hotels were scarce and expensive, we wound up being able to book a brand new hotel on campus (Virginia Guest House) which is walking distance to the arena. It’s very very nice. If not for wanting to walk to the shows I’d have stayed elsewhere but this was perfect
FRI afternoon we ate at a nice grocery store on campus called Foods of All Nations that had a prepared food section and sandwich counter. Not bad. After the show we ate in the lot.
JPJ Arena is awesome…old school, no hassles, easy in and out and no cops. If you like a band playing there you can’t do better for an indoor show. The shows were lots of fun.
SAT we went to the downtown mall area which for about the hundredth time made me ask “why don’t we have anything like this at home?” And then I remember why…
Very cool area, there was a great farmers market and an arts market, but the highlight was a free show at the Ting Pavilion which is a tented amphitheater at the end of the mall area. Incredibly nice. The band was just a local dead cover band but they have name acts playing there all summer. This thing blew my mind at how nice it is. Again, why don’t we have anything like this?
We at outside at a wine bar which was pretty good, then went to the show.
SUN we packed up and ate lunch at Guajiros Miami Eatery; fantastic and highly recommend.
From there we drove to Monticello which neither of us had ever visited. We spent about 4 hours taking a quick tour of the inside of the house, a longer look at the cellar rooms (kitchens, smokehouse, etc) and then a longer look walk thru the gardens and grounds. Magnificent. This place is a must visit and is astoundingly beautiful
So, that’s a quick trip to Charlottesville everyone was nice except there is a particular species of elitist UVA douchebag that we did run into pretty often, if that bothers you. Must be something in the water there
Western VA is gorgeous especially in the spring. As part of a visit to that region Charlottesville has a lot to offer. We are coming back in July to see Roanoke and the drive the blue ridge parkway

When you go back to VA in the summer stop off in Lexington, VA. Gorgeous small town with Washington & Lee and VMI flanking the downtown area.

I lived Charlottesville when I visited. My brother went to UVA Law school and absolutely lived his time in Charlottesville. A beautiful place with great wineries, breweries and restaurants.
I would like to one day go to a traditional hand woodworking school close to Charlottesville in Earlysville, VA.
