This is badass. Developed by the Japanese.
Cue 17 "tip" jokes

The Sword Tip Visualization System, or "Fencing Visualized," is a Japanese-engineered technology that tracks and displays the real-time trajectory of fencing blades during matches. Using AI, computer vision, and markerless technology, it draws, in real time, the path of the sword tip, allowing audiences to see the speed and precision of moves too fast for the human eye

Learned nothing from hockey, I see.

It looks more like rhythmic gymnastics ribbons than lightsabers to me.

This is way cooler and way more necessary than what the NHL did, and its in a sport no one watches anyway so its not like less people will watch because of this

it cool to see on like a replay but idk if I want to see it live.
I wouldnt mind like something to help you track just the end but the lingering line is distracting.
it is cool to see how much the swords move.
Is this just foil and epee or saber too?

I would assume Epee will use it as sword tips matter. Saber it matters less as there is less tip work of course from it being a slashing weapon

Fencing is hard to enjoy because it’s difficult to see any separation in talent(for us folks who don’t have an eye for it).
If you gave a 12 year old a sword and said let’s see what you’ve got, they’d probably be doing exactly what it looks like fencers are doing.

It's a huge amount of being in the right space and distance. So while a 12 year old may be able to perform the same general moveset, they will not be able to judge distance and how far they should/should not be to perform things correctly.

Oh no doubt, just saying it’s hard to pick up on that live.
With no understanding of the sport, it all looks completely random to me.

It would be interesting what the NHL could do with advanced technology and the puck highlighting.

Not sure what it adds to the 99.9% public untrained eye...except, like you said, kids fighting with ribbons on the end of sticks.
Once you see the ribbons, that's all you see...looks like an unchoreagraphed spastic distraction.
Can't they just light the swords and then give us the dramatic highlighted slow-mo of the kill shot or touch? (That's one thing you never really consistently clearly saw on TV in Olympic matches)...If they want to spice things up, add X-Ray 3D imaging of simulated internal organs I guess.

Would rather them have real swords.
Obviously blunted.

90% of fencing's cultural relevancy is due to Hollywood using it as an "activity that shows this character is rich and elite (and, probably, evil)".

Yeah but it would at least help you track the weapons.
Sabers are thin and it’s a super fast event.
still not a huge fan
