which route though?
by taking classes, MS in Accounting(really don't want to live in BR), MBA somewhere, work then go to school?

Just do it, it's only another year, and the MS isn't that hard.

If you want to do accounting work for a living get your MS and do it now. Don't wait.

If you know you want to be a CPA, then I would recommend the MS in Accounting. The course work will be much more beneficial to the CPA exam.

ok thanks guys,
how is the coursework for the MS? is there lots of research involved like most masters programs or is it just accounting work?

Really? Every person I talked to, teacher and student, said the exact opposite; that there's nothing in the M.S. that you need for the cpa from a material standpoint, and that is almost all undergrad material. I'm about halfway through the material for FAR, and IMO that is definitely the case.

You don't have to do any research, its not a Phd. Its 30 hours of extended undergrad imo. The only reason I feel like I need to get it is because pretty much everyone else is going to have one. If it was two years, I might have a different opinion, but another year is no big deal.

Really?
I have a MBA so I can speak that the course work would do absolutely nothing for the CPA. My assumption regarding the MS lead to my comment. If you've heard to contrary, then that may be the case. I've looked into the CPA exam the past year and will probably just use Becker if I ever decide to pursue it, which i heard is the best prep if you need it.
My father-in-law has a BA in biology and took some undergrad accounting courses to meet the hours requirement and passed it on the first try. The whole 150 hours thing is just a barrier to entry, imo.

did you go for just 2 semesters, 15 hrs each or did you take it during the summer as well? also, did you have a job while in school?

I'm taking Becker right now. That's all it is, I agree. I wouldn't do it if I didn't feel like I had to.

I start in August. I plan on doing normal 15-hr schedules. I probably won't work in the fall, because I'm trying to finish the cpa by October (I have 150+ undergrad hrs). Spring is up for grabs. I know several people who have just recently graduated that worked while taking 15 hrs though.

I did it at night while I worked. Took me about two years.
You will understand your material more and can contribute to the discussions more if you have some work experience under your belt. You don't have to have some fancy job to do this either. You can comprehend the managerial side of the program more if you have actually been a part of or witnessed some of the scenarios you will cover.

I intend to get an MBA as well, but for the reasons you just stated, I don't plan on doing it until I've worked for three years or so. That plan is perpetually in flux, though.

I would look at what other requirements you need as far as classes. Some states don't count MBA classes towards the CPA requirement. If you want an MBA, I would look into doing some correspondence classes to meet your requirements.
I would also talk to the CPA society of the state you want to hold your charter as a CPA and see what they recomend or require.
