As many of you might have seen, there was an e-mail sent out today about the the new budget and how it will take its toll on the university. While i am aware things have to be done to account for the economy, there are some things that should not be messed with. The following is a small quotation from the e-mail:

quote:

BATON ROUGE – LSU submitted its mid-year budget-reduction plan to the LSU System Office today. In the budget-reduction plan, the university slashed $12.66 million from its operating budget in response to mid-year budget cuts. This brings the total impact on LSU’s budget to approximately $43 million in the last 12 months

quote:

Students will see the impacts of the budget reduction in other ways, such as less visiting scholars and guest lecturers; an impact on minority student recruitment through the budget reductions for the Office of Multicultural Affairs and African American Cultural Center; and a smaller Tiger Marching Band.

A Smaller Tiger Marching Band

That is it ladies and gentleman. A smaller band. The one thing that has stood as a symbol of pride for the University and has an undefeated record every time they have stepped on the field in Death Valley. Something must be done to uphold the tradition, power, finesse and respect that TGBFTL has worked so hard for, and not leave them out to dry.

I am not sure how cutting band members saves the school money, as I am pretty sure much of the finances come from athletics. Anyway, here a few of my guesses and solutions to potential problems.

Is it the Transportation to games? - Take less people
Is it the $1000 Stipend received by each band member? - Reduce the stipend
Is it the upkeep of the instruments? - Make people use their own
Is it the 400 seats they take up in the stadium? - Don't even get me started.

For all that is good at LSU, don't let the administration dictate the future of a historically powerful program.

The band deserves props. At games there is no greater sound than the first few notes of Hold that Tiger.

What can we do? The band nees a TAF of its own.

I just doesn't really make any sense. What a random place to go looking for a way to save the budget. By chopping 50 or however many people out of Tiger Band?

Usually when businesses have to downsize, they get rid of parts of the company that isn't performing as well as it should be. You don't downsize the part that's doing it's job well.

I just don't understand how or why they would cut people from the band. The Tiger Band doesn't even meet next semester so the costs they are cutting are technically for the Fall Semester. Also, like stated earlier most of the budget is from Athletics. I am sure that the amount of money in question is not large at all. I don't think it costs that much to allow 325 students to be in a band. The only large cost outside of games is the stipend.

Add a $50 fee per semester to each student's account. That would raise close to $3 mil per year.

Problem solved.

Drop 10 schollies from the football team...Miles doesn't play freshmen anyway.

agreed. the band is the only consistent aspect of lsu football. year in and year out they are top notch and are known as one of the best, if not the best band in the nation. to make a cut to something that is consistently the best does not make sense

Perhaps some sort of fundraiser, like the I Like Mike campaign that raised money for his new habitat. A raffle where the winner can march out on the field with the band at a home game. Fund raising concert. Something.

How much does it cost to run the band per year? How much money does the school plan on saving by reducing the size of the band?

Why not just add a $1 surcharge to each football ticket sold and turn that money over to the band? That would be $700,000+. That would make more sense than reducing the size of the band, and I doubt the Tiger faithful would complain about the extra $1/year, especially if they know what it is going for.

Are we really complaining that they are cutting the band instead of classes, professors, etc... what is it called again...Louisiana State UNIVERSITY. Last time I checked it was a school.

I hate to see anything athletic related cut at all, I go to just about every football, baseball, and basketball there is....but to complain about this is pretty pathetic.

No one wants their area cut, but we don't have a choice guys...

I think there are alternatives, and that is what is being proposed. The amount of money we are talking about is miniscule, and there are creative solutions that people would be willing to support.

Since atletics and the ancillaries like the band are extraciricular, letting the consumers be given some alternatives to the cuts seems like a great solution.

GFY. They do that almost every year anyways. Students shouldn't be expected to bear all the burden for this with new fees

There is one of sorts, it's the Friends of the LSU Tiger Marching Band label that bands together donations for the new band hall through LSU Foundation, TAF or LSU Alumni Association. They have a national task force that meets a few times per year and the development director for the music school has to carry the water. This is more channel building and basic communications rather than an actual volunteer driven booster group like TAF or even like a band parents association that most high schools have to raise money for instruments, travel etc.

Maybe the Friends group could try to enlist active membership from band alumni, fans, parents and event the students themselves to activate a lot more voices and channels to get out a call for help and funnel more donations through the existing structure.

Here in ATL we have raised over $12,000 for Tiger Band Hall fund but the alumni chapter can't do it constantly due to commitment to scholarship endowment program. More rank and file LSU fans who SAY they support Tiger Band should step up and show it.

I don't see a problem with reducing the band's size. How many fewer members are they considering?
