describes the annual killing of dolphins in a National Park at Taiji, Wakayama, in Japan from an anti-dolphin hunting campaigner's point of view.[2][3] The film highlights that the number of dolphins killed is several times greater than the number of whales killed in the Antarctic, and claims that 23,000 dolphins and porpoises are killed in Japan every year. The migrating dolphins are herded into a hidden cove where they are netted and killed by means of spears and knives over the side of small fishing boats.

Anyone seen it?

The poster says, "a cross between flipper and the bourne identity"...Really? are the dolphins really secret agents with an aptitude for killing?

Not that it matters to me, but are they endangered? Or are people just mad about it because they are cute?

I'm probably showing my own ignorance when I ask this question, but why do people get all up in arms when dolphins are killed (as opposed to numerous types of fish)?

Because dolphins are mammals as opposed to true fish. Mahi-mahi was a true fish that was called dolphin (renamed a few years ago to avoid confusion), but it wasn't related in any way to the "Flipper" species.

As for my joke about it tasting like tuna, there was a big uproar about 10 years ago of dolphins being killed as bycatch by the big tuna boats, so there was a campaign about dolphin free tuna.

you should watch the documentary. Not only are there reasons why the dolphins are being killed is wrong, there's reasons why you shouldn't even eat the dolphin meat.

It really is a great documentary. It's, at times, both thrilling and heart breaking. I knew after I saw it, it would probably win best doc. It's the best documentary I've seen since man on wire, which also one best documentary. Hell, it's at the top of the list of best documentaries I've ever seen.

I thought it was worthless hippie propaganda. It is not even illegal to kill dolphins in Japan. The documentary is supposed to "horrify" you, but it just made me hungry.

Well, if it matches up to Man on Wire then I'll definitely give it a watch down the line. Maybe the film will enlighten me a little bit as to why dolphins should be protected.

As to the previous poster that cited the dolphin's status as a mammal for being a reason that killing them is frowned upon, I'm only reminded of the numerous, land-dwelling mammals that we kill quite regularly.

Are we less willing to support the murder of dolphins because they are "cute?" Because they tend to display a greater intellect than other, similar animals? Because they are becoming extinct?

Does the movie answer any/all of these questions?

uh, no they aren't. All they had to do to get out of the cove is jump over the nets. After one of the little ones got speared and was bleeding all over the place, it jumped over the nets. Dolphins can jump, they just didnt. And apparently they didnt notice that every time their friends swam pass this cove, that they never returned, and the water always tasted like blood

Anyone else think it's funny a reviewer called it a "cross between Flipper and The Bourne Identity".
