Is the oil spill worse than Hurricane Katrina?

I was having a discussion with my mom the other day and she says even professors are saying it's worse than Katrina. I say this is the biggest load of crap I have ever heard. Hundreds of people were killed during Katrina and the economic impact IMO, doesn't come close. What say you?

850,000 housing units were destroyed in Katrina. Way more than 10,000 jobs were disrupted for months or longer.
They aren't even in the same discussion.

So Obama is to blame for BP, but not Bush and the response to Katrina. Laughable at best.
I think its depends, it could be much worse than katrina. While the well is capped, how much oil was let out? How long will it linger on the beaches? What will be the long term impacts of the use of dispersents be? When will people go back to the coast for vacation?
The issue with the oil spill is that it impacts TX, La, MS, AL, and FL......where as Katrina was more isolated.
I am not even sure you can compare the two, except they were two man made disasters caused by gov't neglect and massive corruption

Yeah, but the impact of the oil spill is the entire gulf coast (economics, and oil on beaches), so by definition Katrina is "more isolated" since the geographic area is smaller. But by no means was the impact a small area, I wasn't trying to convey that.

Well I don't know about that, I would say that more people were severely impacted by katrina. But you have to to think that gas prices would be lower without the spill, so maybe more people are impacted but to a lesser degree?

no one knows yet, what the long term damage to the ecology is going to be. so the oil spill has a possible higher long term cost.

From a jobs perspective, yes.

Oil spill is not.
The moratorium on drilling is the real disaster here.
But neither are worse than Katrina.

Lets see... lets name one way the the oil leak has been worse than Katrina. Any aspect.
Katrina did way more structural damage... Katrina did way more enviromental damage...
