Cougar

A coworker who lives up near Greenburg has lost a couple dogs (blue healer mix and a 95lb Golden) and a bunch of Guineas in the last couple weeks. A neighbor of hers has seen a cougar in the area.
Question is what are the hunting regs here in LA pertaining to cougars? How would one go about hunting one?

LDWF will most definitely tell you that cougars do NOT exist in La. I know that cougars do exist, but, I would be willing to bet that there will NEVER be a cougar season.

In Texas they are not considered game animals so there is no season and as long as you have a hunting license they are fair game. Just didn't know about LA. Didn't see anything on the LDWF site.

I would have zero hesitation killing cougar anywhere around any property I owned or lived.

Those frickers are like nutria in South Dakota. Sightings all over in the city, I remember once or twice before I moved there was a pair spotted by the Chili's restaurant in a field. Always had to be strapped if you were in the woods for any reason, or you were taking a huge life gamble.

they have admitted to cougars over the last year, some are making their way around. you CAN NOT shoot them. i believe they are protected in LA.

If they are threatening my health safety or that of my pets, children or livestock. I will, with a quickness. I will also report it to LDWF so they can study what they need.
Now if I see one out and about, or standing in a pipeline, I dont see a reason to pull over and shoot. But if you are losing pets or anything else around you property and you see one in the vicinity, I doubt you have any real problems if you kill it.

if you are in immediate danger, then yes, but if you know one is around and you are worried about it, they will just tell you you should have called the biologist, to come trap it. its a 100,000 $ fine i believe

you will
now if you catch it in the act, or if you fear your life is in danger then ok, but just because animals are going missing and you see one around no

you are correct Lingua!
Did some further digging and found this...
Cougars that occur in Louisiana are protected under state and federal law. Penalties for taking a cougar in Louisiana may include up to one year in jail and/or a $100,000 fine.

That's a damn hefty fine!!

If a fella lives in the country with his kids playing outside and sees a cougar slipping around, kill it.
I will donate to the cause.
Cougars are not dumb, they are not lingering around an inhabited dwelling for shits and giggles, they know the risk of coming into contact with humans. They are hanging out for a reason.
I am a very conservative person and would never harm an animal out of season or if it would not harm a human. However, unfortunately if we are forced to share the same ground, I cant imagine you can take the chance.

your right, if your kids are playing around outside and you see a cougar hanging around, he is most deff hunting. but like was said earlier if you have pets missing or things of that nature and you see the cougar one day just by accident, you will have big issues if you kill it.
