Baton Rouge Food Truck Events

Are they still doing a weekly meetup of food trucks here in BR? Local taqueria owner I know got a new food truck a couple of months ago, but has mostly kept it around Greenwell near the Latin clubs.

Is there a place in town where they can park alongside other food trucks, one night a week? And is this done with the city's blessing?

Just guessing that that Wround Up member Taco De Paco might have an issue with a new truck that serves a similar menu at the same place. That being said, maybe they can ask them at this week's event?

These guys are selling authentic fare, so the food is going to be pretty different.

Who determines what food trucks can participate?

Again with the "just guessing", but I think it's folks behind Curbside who make the arrangements. Note that these are normally held on the parking lots of private businesses, so don't be surprised when they have the final word.

Stealing a marketing idea from Austin -- with so many food trucks that they have clumps of them all over town -- perhaps your friends can look around for some other trucks/vendors that don't normally do the Wround Up & create a different gathering, at a different site and/or at a different night.

Suggestion for something different to do: the Wround Up seems to be light on dessert offerings (cup cakes, ice cream, etc.).

It's a cash cow, and one of the owners of Taco de Paco is one of the chief organizers of the event and I can assure you that he's not going to be very high on competition, especially one from authentic cuisine. However, as time goes on and more trucks come onto the scene, I think you will see another event with different trucks. Right now, there are a few more trucks that aren't participating besides your guy Afreaux, and others are getting trucks up and ready. It's only a matter of time.

Exactly, is a food truck scared of competition like the brick and mortar places are? Put out a better product and you have nothing to worry about, right?

Well, I can see where he might not want to have a wround up where you have similar food in such a smaller setting, especially since he's doing a lot of the leg work to get things going.

The Wednesday Wroundups are relatively closed events for a couple reasons:

1) There is limited space at those venues and 5-6 trucks in the those private lots are about all you can fit.

2) The owners of the 5-6 trucks that are involved with it have created a really popular event, and they don't necessarily want every new truck on the block to just come benefit from the work they've already done, especially if that could mean cutting their profits or taking their space in the parking lot.

3) The existing owners have an agreement whereby they won't cook the same style of food or open up a rival style food truck. The newer trucks haven't been a part of that and have come in with trucks that are in more direct competition based on style of food (such as the Taqueria truck and Taco de Paco). They don't like that. I can understand why. Jared (Ninja Snowballs and Taco de Paco) isn't going to go open up a burger truck (Curbside) because that's already in the group.

There is definitely room for another group of trucks to band together. That's the obvious and clear path here. Three Bones, Salivation Station, All Star, the upcoming GeauxYo, and this Taqueria truck should all get together and do their own thing on Thursday nights or something!
