Advice on alligators

I live next to a bayou and have seen alligators lately. One almost gave me a heart attack today. It was sitting on the bank, then jumped into the water as I got closer. Since I'm new to being so close to alligators, I was wondering if this is normal behavior. Any tips on how to avoid such encounters would be appreciated.

They are more scared of you than you are of it...just don't get in between a mother and her nest and you will be fine

Better for it to jump in the water than turn around and come after you.
In all seriousness though, that's just what they do. You don't have anything to worry about. If it's skittish, it'll bail off into the water. If it's a bigger one or one that's used to people, it'll probably just sit there and act like you don't exist unless you get too close. The main thing is don't feed them. You don't want them getting friendly.

Hope you don't have pets, or any attachment to them.

Main message is do not feed them. If you view the alligator as a threat, you can call your local animal control dept and they will probably come and catch it and relocate it.
How big was the gator?

This is good advice.
If it were me I would just leave them alone and enjoy the scenery. Only reason I would ever have a worry is if I had small children in my household or nearby. If that is the case I would contact the Wildlife and Fisheries for assistance. (going about things yourself can get you in a bit of trouble if you don't have legal clearance to do so)

DO NOT FEED IT Keeping it wild and afraid of humans is the best thing. Also, keep pets away from the bank.
I know a park ranger in Florida that said people insisted on feeding the gators in the parks. These gators associated people with food and had to be destroyed.
