Why not add SMU?

Nice Stadium. Great looking babes loaded with Daddy's money, huge TV market, history behind program, alumni that spend and support the school, good competitor, could quickly (five years) be competitive in SEC with as much talent as Texas has. Plus, it would royally piss off TU for the SEC to have a team in the 5th largest TV market.

I love SMU, and have a lot of friends/family that went there, but this is a huge stretch. A&M beat the ever-living shite out of them in their first game.

That "nice stadium" holds 30k so I wouldn't consider that SEC caliber and they are not a major player in the Dallas market. Plus, when did the SEC's goal become pissing Texas off?

SMU might make a good fit for the revamped Big12 after OU leaves, but no way do they get an SEC invite

SMU used to be 'da bomb!
They would have to up stadium capacity, especially if they played LSU. I think they could easily add capacity and be larger than Vandy. If they were in the SEC, or any BCS conference, for that matter, within five years they could be relevant.

I grew up in Dallas and NOBODY watches SMU there so the TV market argument should be thrown out

Rice - TU's annual rent-a-win game.

I feel like not everyone gets what expansion is all about. It's not just a race to get to 16. No one is just looking for more mouths to feed.
A school being located in a certain city doesn't necessarily get you that market. Does anyone think Rice gives you the houston market? Or Tulane N.O.?
The SEC either wants a name brand football school that will attract tv viewers around the country, i.e Fla. St, or a school that legitimately opens up a new, large tv market, i.e. Texas A&M.
Because this being driven by those two factors the SEC doesn't appear, on the surface to have many good options left.
