I missed the window with tomatoes. I just planted a few satsuma trees and looking to plant some other stuff. However, I'm not sure what is good to plant at the beginning of the summer

I saw some tomatoes at the store the other day. I would plant if you find the plants.

That guide is money. I can't tell you how many times I've used it since I started planting my garden.

I'm glad he brought it up. I need to plan what I am planting late summer.

The last page has a chart for planting a year round garden. It is a great way to get ideas

Another question...which type of tomato has anyone had experiences with down in LA? Also, should I plant determinant or interdeterminant?
Posted on 5/22/12 at 12:30 pm to TigerTatorTots
I plant creoles and have no issues.
determinants - only grow so much, usually all tomatoes ripen around the same time then plant dies
indeterminants - will grow and produce tomatoes until frost if kept alive

Are there any tomato plants will will grow year after year if I keep them alive through winter?
Posted on 5/22/12 at 12:33 pm to TigerTatorTots
Planted 2 creoles and 2 big boys.

TBH it's more of a hassle to keep them alive past frost. Hell, I get tired of taking care of them around July.

Plants or seeds are cheap enough. Knew a guy had a greenhouse and would bring me tomatoes all year. That would be the way to go. I think he would replant two plants every 2 months. Always had 8 making tomatoes at a time.
You also would need lights to trick them into thinking its summer when it is dark 14hours in the winter.

Okra loves the heat. Squash could probably still do well also. Use seeds, worst that can happen is they don't grown and you're out $1.50.

it's the heat most likely

Looks like I'm going to try Okra and Creole tomato seeds
Or maybe sub the creole with one of the heat resistant types such as Phoenix and Florida 91

Go to www.thebayougardener.com a guy by the name of Donald runs it. He lives around alexandria if i remember correctly and he has a garden calendar that gives you a really good idea of not only what to plant but when and when to start the seeds, etc. Right off hand right now is a good time to start fall tomatoes, okra, purple hull peas, mississippi silver skin peas, maybe some hot peppers. I just put in some hot peppers. If you have a shady spot the cucumbers would do pretty well there. My favorite tomatoes in my limited experience are Cherokee Purples and Sunsugar. have some Celebrity in the ground right now that are growing very well.
