Anybody know of a place to get a cow slaughtered? Think of going in halves with a buddy and getting one done. How much is the going rate for it to be processed and packaged?

With the price of beef now, you're better off selling the calf and buy all good meat instead of having all the meat in your freezer that you wouldn't ordinarily buy.

If you insist, how far you looking to drive.

Wait a few weeks the price of cattle took a hard hit this week with the price of corn. Wait and see what happens. A couple weeks may save you a couple hundred!

Totally agree. I have slaughtered my own steer twice and you end up spending more money than the grocery store would charge. Plus you need a massive freezer to store it, and at the end of the year you have 50 pounds of roast/chuck meat you really don't care to eat.

Im kinda curious about this myself. What would be a ballpark number (1/2 beef + butcher)? Are we talking $500 or $2000? How many total pounds of beef do you end up with? 200 or 500?

There's a lot of cuts you probably don't use and don't expect any prime grade steaks either. I get farm raised beef for free from my dad and only take the ground chuck/sirloin.

Found a cow for .85/lb. found a place in breaux bridge. They charge $40 to slaughter it, .60/lbs to process and wrap. Thinking that if split between two people it wouldn't be too bad.

It's tough not to want to sell all your cows right now.

.60 per pound processing is hanging weight, which includes fat and bone they will throw away.

If the cow you buy weighs #1000 you will have an approximate hanging weight of 600#. At .60 that will cost $360. Then the 850 you pay for the cow and the 40 for killing gets you up to $1250. You can expect 450 pounds of meat off a hanging weight of 600. So that brings the average cost per pound to be $2.77.
