Can we have an honest discussion about Jacques-Imo's?

I see this place reccomended occasionally. I know it's a popular place. I kind of get it... It's hip, It's irreverent, The chef/owner is a character, there are a few solid dishes there.
But let's be honest about a few things...
If it was in the quarter, it would be called a "tourist trap". It's nothing but deep fried everything covered in goop. And the food isn't my real issue with this place.
It's freaking disgusting. I have been twice. The first time, there was an overwhelming stench coming from the bath rooms. The second time I went, I went, a roach crawled on to the table and onto the plate of a lady in our party. When roaches in your restaurant are brave enough to climb on to a crowded table in broad day light, you have a problem.
I have heard many similar tales like this... Dead rats in the wall, roaches crawling on the walls/floor in the dining room, spoiled food being served to customers.
With all of the incredible places we have to eat in New Orleans, I just don't get why this place would be on anyone's list?

Yea its overpriced and overrated..its what, 16 bucks for two pieces of fried chicken? The alligator cheesecake is about all I would be excited to eat there

In the beginning it was pretty good. I haven't been in years, though. I hear it's gone downhill. Regardless, nothing about the place would make me want to waste the time it takes to eat there.

I went several years ago and it was my first time. Nothing we ate was memorable and I've never had a desire to go back.

I guess Jules Winnfield said it best... It's got personality, and personality goes a long way.

yeah, the food was pretty heavy for me...and that was even after i was so drunk I don't recall what I ate
I'd not go back....but I sat next to Gary Tuckman and his producer and cameraman, so that was cool

I agree. The place is overpriced and overrated

Yeah, I ate there once. Thought the place was really cool, and the alligator cheesecake was divine. Fried green tomatoes were good too. I didn't think the fried chicken was anything spectacular.
My waiter seemed tired and exasperated as if he was coming off a drug or was badly hungover. He actually disappeared midway through the meal and a girl showed up to serve us.
I also thought it was expensive for what you get. I mean, I guess they might as well charge that much since the place is always PACKED to the brim including a wait. Hell, they could probably charge more and people would still fill up the place.

I went about a month ago with a group of 8 and it was awful. waiter was trying to rush out the door because he said they had another table coming in after us, but the thing was our reservation was for 9:00. needless to say, he was just bullshitting us. food was terrible service was terrible, I don't know if I will go back. I used to enjoy it, but not so much anymore.

Always was one of the spots I wanted to hit. Have heard opinions across the board. Leaning to no.

I declined an invite tonight to eat there with friends. Plan on just meeting them after for drinks.

Not to mention they cram you in there like sardines and if you have a hearing problem, conversation can be a chore.
I did like my meal the one time I went.

Inderdasting. I was expecting more diversity of opinion. My biggest problem is the sanitation. I'm no germaphobe, but damn! Nothing like the smell of sewer, or roaches crawling on your food to ruin a dining experience.

I went a number of times "back in the day" and loved it, but now realizing that was several years ago. Maybe it's changed?

I've never had a bad experience at Jacque-Imo's, always been a favorite of mine.

I did not notice any of this the last time I was there a couple of months ago. The food was amazing and all 6 people in out party all thought so as well.

I think it benefits from two things: First, the location right next to the Maple Leaf. Secondly, it is basically a tourist trap for the tourists who want to "get away from the tourist traps and eat where the locals eat".

I found the alligator cheesecake to be too heavy to even enjoy.
