BREAKING: US officials: Only American solider held captive in Afghanistan freed, is in US custody.

quote:

WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. officials say the only American soldier held prisoner in Afghanistan has been freed and is in U.S. custody.

The officials say Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl's (boh BURG'-dahl) release was part of a negotiation that includes the release of five Afghan detainees held in the U.S. prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

The negotiation between the U.S. and the Taliban was mediated by the government of Qatar.

The 28-year-old Berghdal had been held by the Taliban since June 30, 2009. The officials say he is in good condition and able to walk.

The officials insisted on anonymity in order to describe the details on Bergdahl's release.

I don't know anything about what they do to POW's...

but what would they do that would render him unable to walk?

Myriad of things I'd imagine. I doubt they treated him as decent as we treat POW's. Malnutrition, torture, beatings.. etc.. I'm sure we'll find out down the road what he had to endure for the past, almost 5 yrs.

I'll assume you're a civilian and that you aren't a student of history or our enemies in the world. I'm not judging you for that, in any way. Part of the reason we do what we do is so that y'all don't have to learn or know, if you so choose.

Suffice it to say, "You probably don't want to know."

Welcome home SGT Bergdahl - good luck on your book/movie deal - get good representation and never work again. You've earned it, brother.

Agree with you.

I just hope this doesn't encourage more kidnappings to force more exchanges, down the road. Glad he's on his way home though. Couldn't imagine what he went through, or his family.

Did we negotiate with terrorist for some dang Public relations, because Obama is sucking so bad, and was it worth 5 terrorist being freed? I don't know if this was a good precident, even in the back-drop of good news.....Seems like a PR boost was needed, and the Media to shift focus, am I reading this wrong?

So we just changed our foreign Policy, for a PR stunt when Obama needed it... So Americans and Soldier world wide are at risk....And people even think there is a debate about him not being our Worst President. Hope they release the terrorists names, so we can follow the deaths this decision will bring....

Yes. He deserted and attempted to desert previously. He wrote his family stating he "was ashamed to be an American" and tried to mail his uniforms home. I bet 5 years in Taliban captivity made him realize we aren't so bad.

I'm glad we got him back but a hero this guy isn't. If any of those 5 released Gitmo detainees kill anyone, their blood will be on his hands.

So now that we have him back can we charge him with desertion?

Absolutely. But #1, desertion under the UCMJ is really hard to prove. And #2, I doubt they aggressively pursue desertion charges because it'll make the military look heartless. It's a PR nightmare for them. But he deserted at best and aided the enemy at worst.
