Saw it....not sure how to rate it.
Its not a bad film, but I am stuck comparing it to the book.
They missed big time on the humor element of the book IMO. Flashes of it was there, but they skipped a lot of it.
MILD SPOILERS
While I expected them not to be able to cover the science of what he was doing and the factors of his situation, they took it a step further and whitewashed pretty much ALL of his struggles. As far as I can tell, the only problem Mark had other than isolation was having to endure disco. No problems or issues other than that. Pretty much twiddling his thumbs waiting for time to pass.
No trial and error to figure out how to manufacture enough water. No cowering in the rover for days as he realized that he fricked up and turned the whole Hab atmosphere to hydrogen.
The trip to the MAV was the worst....no dust storm and no tumble of the rover. No loss of communication to NASA due to a momment of dumbassery. It was literally just a 5 minute montage across Mars. They spent more airtime to bring up the whole space pirate crap in multiple situations than to any problem. Even when they insinuate a problem with their earth bound testing, it never really materializes in any form in practice.
I've seen joy rides with more stress than what he suffered on his long trip to the crater. Hell, at least half of the 5 minute montage of the trip was showing him just chilling and sleeping.
Apparently that was his biggest problem on the trip: the boredom.
Even with the included Hab breach, they toned down the danger. He didn't pull a miracle out of his arse after recovering. Nah...just slap some ducttape on his suit, and he is good to take a leisurely stroll, checking out plants and stuff, before getting a new helmet and calmly walking back to the rover.
I know the run time was 2 hours and therefore things had to be cut.
But the whole story is that of survival on such a harsh and inhospitable world. Gimme SOME adversity. frick.
I'll give the movie this though: its ending is far superior to the book ending of "I reek to an absurdly shocking degree but hey, all of humanity worked together to bring me home so we are all okay"

THIS IS EXACTLY WHY I WAS MAD THEY CAST DAMON.
the dude can be funny in some things like Oceans 11, but Mark Watney was hilarious and dripped sarcasm.
Should have been Pratt, despite his oversaturation right now.

Disclaimer: I didn't read the book so I don't know how it compares.
Best thing Ridley Scott or Damon have done in a while. Was surprisingly funny. Visually it was beautiful.
There was one line of a dialogue/foreshadowing that was so cliche it caused me to cringe. Other than that, I had few complaints.

I have not read the book so...
Enjoyed it...had a nice pace but I have to agree with Volvagia....

Read the book. Saw the movie last night. As with almost any book/movie the book is way better. This is true in this case as well. However, the movie is really well done, and very entertaining. In concept it is similar to cast away, but has much more pace, humor, and content to work with. I really enjoyed the movie, and the book is really a great read.

Just saw it. Didn't read the book, but I loved the movie. I was engaged the whole time and no parts of it felt slow. When it was over, I had no idea it was over 2.5 hours.
One of the best I've seen in awhile. I plan to read the book and buy the blu ray.

I liked the movie a lot, but I think I would have liked it more if I hadn't read the book or watched any previews.

I'd give it a solid 3.5 stars. It had good pace so the movie didn't seem to be that long

Movie's a POS. As anticipated Scott/Damon completely fricked what could have been a great film.
1. It was nothing like Apollo 13 or Castaway. If it had been it would have been better. Apollo 13 was constant stress overload and science. Castaway was a brilliant character study on isolation. The book incorporates major elements of both scenarios and the movie didn't accomplish either.
2. I'm pretty sure the only actor that did somewhat of a good job with their character was Ejiofor. Although other characters were so glossed over it's probably more of an indictment on Scott than the actors. Daniels was trash though
3. Why'd they make the already rushed ending from the book, also unbelievable?

So after seeing this movie I have the following thoughts.
I always thought people who said "the book is sooo much better" were pretentious arse hats. But after reading the book and finishing it 2 nights before seeing the movie, I am said pretentious arse hat.
They left out too much stuff imo.
Spoilers:
I didn't like how they completely skipped the fact that he broke pathfinder. And they completely left out the dust storm while driving to ares 4, and the accident on the way.
The whole part where he explains why he is a space pirate doesn't make sense in the movie because in the movie he never lost contact with nasa, so they did order him to take the mav, so that part only makes sense in the book

Great movie...probably in my top 5. My wife loved it because there wasn't a single car chase :P
