Are there age appropriate independence benchmarks you aim to achieve?
If so can you share some?

It's not based on age, but on the kid I would think.
I see 24 year old people less independent than I was at 12.

The fact that this title, "Free Range Parenting" came up and is now being used as if that way of parenting is weird or outlandish is really disturbing.

It was just called parenting in the 80s when I was growing up.

Can you elaborate for me, I don't quite get it.

Maybe the name will help turn this now-rare parenting style into a protected class, so people don't get arrested for raising a latchkey kid or letting them play in their own yard unsupervised.

agreed!
I think this free range parenting crap....
Is: letting your kid wonder stores willy nilly, eating what they want, doing what they want, knocking stuff down. All because the parents are terrified of a tantrum instead of smacking their asses?

Not exactly sure what free range parenting is
But it has to be a million times better than helicopter parents. Those people are annoying as hell.

My ex SIL was/is a helicopter parent. To the point that: She literally planned her first born's conception so, the small school he would attend, had the least competition for getting Valedictorian in high school.
She would be room mother and control his teachers and forced him into the gifted program via teachers bribes.
It is sickening. No wonder he is not one big gay

1. save the spankings / arse whoopins for the big stuff ie lying, backtalk etc
2.keep em btwn the yellow lines, don't over-parent, let em figure some things out on their own
3. when they tell you something about their day, something you would normally raise your eyebrow to, shut your f&cking yap and listen.... they'll learn really quick not to let mom/dad in on the know

Being a brat and being independent are completely different. I'm not referring to an absence of discipline.
I'm referring to using a knife at the dinner table. Walking oneself to and from school. Going to a store or in a store by themselves. Having or attending a sleepover.
I 100% agree that most of these things are things children raised 20 years ago and more just did without question.
Yes it's almost comical there is a term like free range parenting to describe a teen at a playground without their parents.
But yes the term exists, and it's something that varies from parent to parent. My wife and I aren't on the same page completely. Partly why I brought this up.

I think a lot of it depends on the type of area you live in too.

I have a suspicion that someone recently watched Last Man Standing.

Auggie, certainly, aged based benchmarks are not absolute. The independence my children have living in key west is much different than some of my friends children experience living in a foreign country in the Middle East.

where do you live where six year olds go to a store by themselves?

A rural village in the German wine valley. Kids walk, take bikes, the bus to school.
Often go to the local grocer or bakery to pick up a few odds and ends.
We moved here from BR so it was quite a change. It's just a ton safer here, so you let you kids run out a lot more without worrying about it. It'll be an adjustment when we move back to the States.

Oh wow, that's pretty cool.

It's almost weird. My 5 & 6 year olds will ask if they can go play at the playground down the street. I'm like "sure, come home when I whistle." Bam! They're off.
We've agreed that when my son is 7 he can ride his bike to soccer practice by himself, and it is about 1 mile away. I never thought I'd be comfortable with that.
