Interesting article on Steinberg's for those of you who remember this store.

For those of you who don't, it's where we went to get cool stuff before we had Bass Pro, Cabela's, Bowie Outfitters, Academy etc.

Back when you could go to a REAL sporting goods store and the employees actually knew about the products and how to use them.

I was at LSU 69-72. It was the biggest sporting goods store I had seen up to the time. Enjoyed going there.

Back in the 60's I would make a little extra cash selling fur from my trap line there. Of course their prices weren't very good, but it paid for my beer and gas.

Sending that article to my dad. He worked there when he was at LSU in the 70s. Still talks about it, especially the guns they had.

Yeah, the guns. We would go over there and drool. Never thought then I would be able to buy all the guns I had before the boating accident.

I remember they had a Mannlicher like the one that killed Kennedy hanging in there.

Now I will pass along my thoughts about Steinbergs and Richard Lispsy. I was only in BTR a yr before it closed down but I remember going into the store seeing the all the supplies and the polar bear. It truly was a great store and with all the BPs, Cabelas etc we have today they still cant compete w/ the knowledge and service that Steinbergs had.
Fast forward a few years to the early 90s when I was at LSU I received a scholarship sponsored by Richard in his Dad’s name, while the money was great to a grad student the best part of it was a trip w/ Richard and his guests to fish with Charlie Hardison fishing in the Tarpon Rodeo. All the old salts were there including Bob Scearce (he damn near knocked me out w a 12 oz weight he was using to bottom fish ). I got to ride down to Grand Isle w/ Richard and we had a great talk about his dad, the Lispeys passion for the outdoors, coastal research at LSU, etc. It was a great trip and while we didn’t win the rodeo we had a great time and I have only fond memories of the experience. Richard has been very passionate about LSU and coastal research, he was on the steering committee for the LSU School of the Coast and Env (in its various incarnations) and has donated lots of time, money and facilitated great discussion on the outdoors.

Bought my S&W Model 66 combat from them, around 1982 I think.

Bob Scearce's son John also worked at Steinberg's.
He worked in the fishing tackle dept in the '70s, I think. Passed away a few years ago.

I just wanted to comment that my grandfather Clark Ramsey Caraway owned this store which was called Buckhorn Sporting Goods before it was Steinberg’s. When Grandfather died the family sold the store. I think it was in 1940. Grandfather worked with his brother at Caraway’s in Logansport, LA . Caraway’s was the oldest building in Logansport or DeSoto parish I’ve been told.

Bought a Browning BL-22 when I was 14 from Steinbergs in Delmont Village for $99.99 on the 12 month no interest plan they had. I think the monthly note was like $9.10 a month which was tough for a 14 year old!

Was a great place to ask questions about guns, for sure. Bought a .300WBY in ‘82 from them & still have it. Bowie can’t even hold their jock strap..
