Challenge calls?

Payton was a little trigger happy with the Red flags today in the first half. The 2nd one was legit but the challenge on Colstons drop was ridiculous. Why was he over playing his hand here?

Colton took two steps after tucking the ball. I thought it was a completion.

He gets a lot of intel from the coaching staff.
His call, but he relies on their judgment too.

Uh wait..... no he didn't! He didn't even have full control of the ball.

Unfortunately, CSP really has never been very good at challenge calls. Good with calling special teams plays though, including today, which bailed us out of that 2nd bad red flag challenge.

Exactly right! This was a textbook "Calvin Johnson" rule situation. One may not agree with the rule, but it has become common knowledge across the league and with fans. There was no excuse for the challenges (both). The challenges were so bad that it make me think they fundamentally don't understand the rule. This is a problem.

Colston's wasn't a catch.
But Watson's was and should have been.

yup

nope
Neither were a catch by the rule as written. Is the rule shitty? Absolutely. That does not make it any less valid. Neither of those were catches, and Paeyton should've known this. Yet another example of his terrible challenge management.

You don't think Watson made a football move?

I appreciate payton's challenge. It was a pretty loud, frick you goodell, when they are made to look assholes for such stupid arse rules.

I think Watson got hosed.
I think the NFL is in full blown denial about the blown call against the Cowboys and are now dragging their feet in order to pretend the right call was made all along.
I think them "enforcing or creating" a rule that was never enforced or existed since I have watched the NFL is further BS.
The Colston play just looked like a bad challenge to me...but the Watson play would have probably been a catch just a year ago in the regular season.

I felt like the second challenge was a big "frick you've gotta give me this one" attempt.
and when that failed. He called the big "frick YOU" fake field goal. I love to see Payton with the fire again.

That's not relevant. He was going to the ground before he made that move; therefore, he had to maintain possession all the way to the ground.
It is the Dez play all over again. It's a shitty rule, but that is the way the rule was written. Was not a catch per NFL rules, should not have challenged.

Interesting way to look at it if correct, but I don't think that's what coach intends when he looks for reviews.

But when has any football play been decided on what happens once you are out of bounds? Play is always dead once you step out of bounds.

Does not matter. The "maintain posession when going to the ground" trumps all and counts for in bounds, out of bounds and on phyllis diller's diapers

This. Colston didn't have control. But I recorded the game and rewatched the Watson challenge a dozen times. He catches and secures the ball, then makes a football move by moving upfield and reaching out towards the first down marker.
As others have noted, it's the same with Dez's catch last year. You don't have to be a football fan to acknowledge that was a reception. The NFL is doing dumb arse NFL things by not acknowledging that as a catch.

Not what the head of officials said last week in the bears-lions gam4

It doesn't matter what you think it is or isn't. The fact remains that the NFL states this is not a catch. Until the rules committee changes this stupid rule, you have to live with this.
The problem is that Paeyton knows this is the rule yet challenged anyway. We were out of challenges before the 1st quarter was over! That's a terrible job of coaching, and he has a history of this shite. He does not deserve a pass simply because we don't like the rule
