Ive been to rural towns in Kentucky, Georgia, and West Virginia and they were pretty damn trashy and/or downtrodden. I've only driven through TN, SC, and NC so I don't know much about it other than how the interstates were.

Raleigh looks nice and Asheville looks like it has a nice hippy vibe, but how is the rest of NC? More specifically the small towns that are within 90 miles of either Asheville, Raleigh, or Charlotte?

Side-question: are the beaches in NC worth a crap?

Oh, and please give examples of some areas you're familiar with in your responses.

I can actually speak on this as I spent ten days in New London and Albermarle. Cool place, nice people but everyone smokes. We went out just about every night and one night the town was deserted so I asked the bartender what the deal was. He said Kenny Cheney was playing in Charlotte so the whole town went apparently. It was about ten years ago and I honestly didn't know who he was so I asked "who the frick is Kenny Cheney?" He looked like he wanted to kick my arse and replied "she thinks my tractor's sexy fricking Kenny Cheney!". Apparently they take shitty country music very seriously up there. CSB.

Hope this insight helps.

I'll never forget, we traveled to Fayetteville, NC to go see Smackdown and ECW, and we ran to a group of Hispanic kids who talked with the thickets country accents I ever heard.

I remember this one girl who was annoyed with her teen aged brother for messing with her hair because she had just got her "hurr plugged".

Also I think they filmed a logging show on the Discovery channel in NC too.

Shelby, Gastonia, and Hickory NC all have there fair share of trash but it's nothing like small towns in the deep south. Boone and Blowing Rock are awesome. Cherokee is a shite hole with a casino.

Fayetteville, NC
Fayettenam - avoid

Newburn is not bad, Kington sucks, Pinkhill sucks, Wilson sucks, Pit Greenville suck unless your an ECU student. Wilmington and little Washington are OK. Rocky mount sucks.
Statesville and concord - nascar
Lake Norman - OT baller

topsail, emeral isle, outerbanks- nice quiet beaches
Pamlico sound- fishing
Havelock, Jacksonville- Marines everywhere

raleigh is great...lived there for 3 years. winston salem is nice... NC is your typical southern state.

wilmington is a nice beach city, Holden is a sleepy beach town but my favorite beach area in NC is Duck, NC on the outerbanks

Only experience I have was from an old coworker from Reileigh. According to him " North Carolina is awesome, unlike the redneck, shithole, inbred Carolina to the south."

Carolina towns that I've lived in:

Raleigh (Cary): great town, awesome schools and parks, vibrant city. educated population

Columbia(Irmo), SC: nice city, friendly but can be closed minded

Florence, SC: redneck central shithole... best thing about the town is that it is only an hour from Myrtle Beach

NC is one of the best states in the entire country and is better than any state in the South. It offers everything. Beaches, mountains, and farm land. It has better colleges than any state in the south. It has its fair share of redneck areas but so do most states. The beaches in NC are probably the best beaches in the South besides Florida. Most people think of the Outer Banks when they think of beaches in NC but I think the Brunswick County beaches are nicer.

I'm from there and you hit it pretty spot on.

It isn't as bad as WV or MS. The farther east you go from I-95, it turns in to pine trees and more trashy/thuggy. Stay within 30 miles of Asheville, 60 miles of Charlotte or 60 miles of Raleigh. Great beaches, great mountains. Terrible football.

The mountain west areas are a funny mix of hillbillies, transplanted money, with a smattering of hippie/granola types.

One of my favorite places in the world. Hope to retire there.
