Watching Iceland vs Hungary and there is an official running the touch line. What's up with this?

5 officials on the pitch now for international matches?

Sorry if I am behind the times.

I want to say that they had extra officials at the touchline in Euro 2012 too, but I think that was still in the experimental phase. I think the five official thing is now officially sanctioned.

Extra eyes in the box and on the end line.

I have no problem with it. At all. I ref soccer and the AR is too far away to make a call, and the referee mechanic has him on the far side. I completely get it.

I have to watch it again but I think the byline official in the Portugal game told the ref to give the penalty.

Because time after time there are fouls right infront of them that they just don't give, never see any discussion between them and the referee either it's embarrassing that they are stood in no further than 12 yards away and never do anything

You rarely see the referee talk to the AR either. That's what the headsets are for.

It's not that they don't do anything .

However, Serie A has had the touchline officials for a couple of seasons and it's certainly not often that you see them intervene when it seems obvious stuff happens about 5 feet in front of their faces.

There's quite a few commentators that rail on it continually, showing replays of one pretty obvious call after another they seem to be looking right at and no call or not reversing a bad one where they have the much closer, better view.

Seems they never actually intervene and only perhaps give the official advice if he asks before making a call.
