Boy's first hunt question.

Anything wrong with it being with Powpow?
I really never had grands, so I cannot identify. Circumstances are such that the boy has an opportunity to go on a deer hunt(he will not be shooting) while visiting Powpow and Uncle. Wife says it should be with me. I say he shouldn't miss an opportunity just because I cannot be there.
What says the OB?

I'd let him go. I wish I could've hunted with my grandpaw. A first hunt, probably "should" be with you, but there's not a rule against it.

If he is close to grandpa then let him hunt, or if you want him to be close. Wish I had some sort of memory like that.

Let him do it if he wants to go.

Let him go. A lot of my outdoor firsts as a kid were with my Granddad. Same with my son.
"Grandaddy's shooting house" was built specifically as an easy to get to, two man stand for him and grandkids.
On a similar note, have you read "The Old Man and the Boy?" If not, find a copy.

No. My first trip into the woods was with my Paw Paw and his Model 1897 pump shotgun.

My first hunt was with my dad's good friend. Never miss an opportunity.

The selfish me wants him on my side BUT he will likely kill his first deer with my step dad. He's the only paw paw that he's ever known and my step dad has 3 girls. Hell, he's got a real grandson and gave my boy his first 4-10 that he had as a kid. Regardless of blood relation, my boy is the apple of his eye and I think it'll make his like complete to have my boy shoot his first deer.

My Dad taught me to hunt, my Grandpa taught me to trespass.

Definitely let him go. My dad is gone and my FIL isn't a hunter. My son hunted with my dad but he wasn't old enough to actually hunt. This past year my son has gotten a lot of 1st and it hurts that my dad wasn't here to see it.

OK, now same thing, but what if it's not Pow Pow, but maternal uncle who lives in the same area? That guy's kids are grown, and I think he really enjoys taking my son out on the property.

You mentioned above that the boy would not be shooting... I think it's really OK if he goes with anyone that you trust if he just wants to go and be in the woods or blind.
If he will actually be "hunting" to kill his first duck/deer etc. then as a father I would want to be there.

I hunted equally as much with my grandfathers as I did with my dad. Back then we mostly squirrel hunted.
I would definitely let him go with powpow, he'll have a great time I'm sure.
