I know some grounds at bigger clubs tend to replace the surface in season.

The ground doesn't get eaten up the same as football. The offensive and defensive lines really ruin the grass at the point of attack.

Different cleat materials sometimes and no front cleat.

Also, the main action for football games goes up and down the middle of the field. Soccer matches have players much more spread out over the course of a match so the same area of the turf isn't just taking a beating.

At the top clubs they pay a shite ton for turf management. I've seen some terrible pitches though.

I believe the NFL brought in the turf manager from Villa Park in recent years to consult or develop the turf for the SB. Maybe they're just better at it over there because they have experience dealing with the consistently shitty weather.

This is a new development as far as footie is concerned. It wasn't until the Premier League and the crazy money it generated.

Search the web for old photos, even as recently as the early 1990s and closer than that for lower leagues. Old Wembley, the grand theatre that it was, even had they typical mud bog in front of goal you see wherever the sport is played.

Look up Derby's old Baseball Ground.
