Why is it so hard for yankees to do a Southern accent?

Maybe a handful of outsiders I've ever seen can pull off a convincing one.

Because there's like twenty different kinds.
It's not unlike asking some baw to speak like a Yankee - world isn't some tiny place contained to just a few parishes.

Some can, some can't
Meryl Streep's in Julia sucked but then she always sucks

When I was a kid I saw an old movie on TV and was surprised how well Joanne Woodward did a Southern accent
later I learned she was from Georgia and went to LSU

Because its not how they naturally talk, and so when they try to pull it off, they force it and over compensate their enunciation and pronunciation.

He's English and pulled it off

Probably the best southern accent I've seen anyone pull off was the character "Hoot" played by Eric Bana in Black Hawk Down. He's English and pulled it off.
Yeah for some reason the southern accent is easier to mimic for British actors. I recall seeing something that said we sound like they did a few centuries ago.

Yeah, I don't think that was very good.
I think Rick on TWD is good and the Jason Stackhouse from true blood are two really good examples, but they're from Australia and England.

I'm fascinated by the concept of accents.

Yeah. I hate that we feel we have to suppress ours in order to sound "educated" when I've met just as many idiots from anywhere else in the country.
Your educateness should be shown by your level of vocabulary and grammar, not the way you pronounce the words.

The southern accent is close to what Elizabethan English sounded like.

He's actually Australian, which makes it more impressive.
