The average MLB team is worth $1.54 billion, 19% more than one year ago

During the 2016 season, baseball's 30 teams posted an average operating income (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization) of $34 million, 52% more than the 2015 season (the previous record). Player costs (57% of the league's operating expenses) did not increase as fast as revenue. In 2016, MLB's 30 teams had aggregate revenue of $9.03 billion, 7.5% more than the previous season. But player costs--payrolls, signing bonuses (drafted players and international signings) and benefits--rose just 3.5%, to $4.56 billion in 2016. By our count, only the Detroit Tigers (-$36.4 million), Dodgers (-$20.5 million), Miami Marlins (-$2.2 million), Baltimore Orioles (-$2.1 million) and Kansas City Royals (-$0.9 million) had operating losses last season.

the average opening day payroll is 4.7% more this season than 2016.
quote:
BAMTech (now two-thirds owned by MLB as a result of separate deals last year with Disney and the NHL) is worth around $3.5 billion, and MLBAM, excluding BAMTech, is worth approximately $12 billion. Thus, baseball’s stakes in BAMTech and MLBAM likely contribute between $400 million to $500 million in value to each of baseball’s 30 teams.

But, but that doesn't fit the narrative at all!

How can a dying sport continue to increase revenue?

This is the key. MLBAM as it was originally known had amazing proprietary streaming software. The HBOGO platform is built on top of it in addition to the ones mentioned above.

That's a bargain. Who wants to throw up some money with me?

It'll be a sad day for baseball when all of their fans die off in about 10 years.

The Nationals are such a waste.

Yeah, they struck gold with that. I especially like how the NHL's digital rights run through MLB.

That's an amazing amount of money....

BAMTech struck a deal in December with Riot Games as well so much $$$
quote:
Today we’re thrilled to announce Riot Games and BAMTech have entered into a first-of-its-kind long-term commercialization partnership to deliver professional League of Legends esports content in regions around the world. We will be working closely with BAMTech to grow revenue in our sport through various means, including sponsorship and advertising. Beginning next year, we’ll also be collaborating to push the boundaries of the esports viewing experience, leveraging BAMTech’s best-in-class technology to create additional possibilities and opportunities for fans to access, and connect with, League of Legends.

List is incorrect, although it is impossible to get a correct reading. The Marlins are rumored to be for sale right now, and they are projected to go between the 1.1 and 1.3 Billion mark. Crazy. Jeter is interested as a majority owner.
ETA:
I am not sure you could put a value on the Yanks, Cubs, Cards, Braves, etc. The Yanks have the YES channel, plus some kind of stadium business they are in with Jones from the Cowboys. The Yanks ownership would ask like 5 Billion if they sold.

MLB is in a better spot right now than the NFL is. That's a fact.
Actually the NFL is in the worst spot of any of the big 4 sports.
