There's an unwanted record in the Gulf of Mexico: This year's "dead zone ," a largely human-caused phenomenon where there's too little oxygen to support marine life, is the biggest ever measured.

This large dead zone size shows that nutrient pollution, primarily from agriculture and developed land runoff in the Mississippi River watershed is continuing to affect the nation's coastal resources and habitats in the Gulf," NOAA said in a news release.

Hmm no map in the link. Probably because it would look small and insignificant?

I've had some great days swimming and fishing swimming in that cobalt blue "dead zone".

Are they positive it is from farming and not the 200 million gallons of oil that BP spilled in the Gulf?

Nitrates are the suspected culprits. The problem is all that run off throughout dozens of states accumulates in the Mississippi river and flows I to the gulf.

Well we do drain like 20 states or something. We could stop growing food with fertilizer if y'all would prefer that
Posted on 8/2/17 at 7:41 pm to crewdepoo
We should dam off the river above Natchez and ban that water from coming down and killing our part of the Gulf.

NOLA is the biggest dead zone on land
Posted on 8/2/17 at 7:46 pm to crewdepoo
This is primarily caused by agriculture all along the Mississippi, so you can't really fault just Louisiana.

Louisiana kills by land and by sea.

It's been a problem for decades.

Well, that happens when 2/3 of the country drains into your state. I love how we get the blame for this shite.

This is like having everyone in the neighborhood have their sewage drain into your yard then blame you for how bad your property smells.

Louisiana is the crummiest state in the U.S.
Yes, behind MS, AL, AR, and WV.
