Iceland winning group with one more game to play.
Whole country 40k less people than new orleans.
Can still finish 2nd and need to win home and away vs another 2nd place team.
Still, i bet the whole country will watch next game.

Also, like last wc qualifying, faroe islands has won 2 games and tied 3 vs big boys. 9 points. Fabulous stuff. 49k people.
Viking spawn. Have a whale killing festival.

Latvian football is in a miserable state. Faroe had 62% possession.

Oh Iceland is legit, no doubt. And Faroe is better than Latvia easily at this point.

The whole world will be better for Iceland being in the WC. They're style of play, heart, determination, and their fanbase are 2nd to none. I wanted to go to Russia for the 2018 WC, but I may go back to Iceland for the WC. They'll have a massive party

That honestly sounds like a pretty fantastic idea.
Reykjavik will be jumping.

Iceland should be an example to everyone of how to organize a youth system. That they can field a team of 23 professionals from a population of 300,000 is frankly amazing. And the country is a republic, which means that in theory it would be very difficult to organize such an endeavor, relative to other systems of government with much more authority.

I'd love it if some billionaire copied Iceland's system and applied it to a US city of similar size.

I know they invested a lot of money 15 or so years ago into hiring good youth coaches and building indoor pitches and training facilities. We're seeing the dividends of that investment now. They have a legit Top 15 team in Europe with a population of less than EBR parish to choose from. Very impressive.

China and India, meanwhile, have over a billion people to choose from and can't even field a team that can get through AFC qualifying.

Well it is easier to centralize 300,000 people than it is to centralize a billion. The task becomes unbelievably complex, especially when there is a large variance in nutrition and social class.

Megalopolis-type cities will make it easier to do that in the future.

Just think about Iceland's development system in NYC, LA, Houston, and Chicago.

Our talent identification still is nowhere near what it needs to be, but it's much better than even ten years ago. Just look at the current crop of U17s. A lot of those kids might have slipped through the cracks not long ago.

Imo, the biggest need is to educate the average joe on what makes for great soccer. We should be leveraging our technology prowess.

shite like this happens because of superior genetic makeup. Icelanders have an innate excellence that was input into our genetic makeup from the beginning. I mean, just check out how awesome I am...

Iceland would have never qualified had they been in anybody's group other than Croatia's.
