This is a great example of progressive histrionics in media re: sex trafficking

NPR article on the newest "Kony 2012" Facebook movement: Cyntonia Brown
but the key paragraph i want to focus on:
a. holy shite...seriously...holy shite
b. federal laws aren't the only laws
c. even then, The Mann Act, a federal law, was passed in 1910
but the key paragraph i want to focus on:
quote:
I think that what is interesting about Cyntoia's case is that she was arrested back in 2004, which was a year before our federal anti-trafficking laws even contemplated the fact that Americans could even be victims of sex trafficking. And so now of course we know all these years later that not only are American citizens able to be victims of sex trafficking, but in fact the vast majority of sex trafficking victims here in the United States are U.S.-born and are U.S. citizens.
a. holy shite...seriously...holy shite
b. federal laws aren't the only laws
c. even then, The Mann Act, a federal law, was passed in 1910
quote:
It is named after Congressman James Robert Mann of Illinois, and in its original form made it a felony to engage in interstate or foreign commerce transport of "any woman or girl for the purpose of prostitution or debauchery, or for any other immoral purpose". Its primary stated intent was to address prostitution, immorality, and human trafficking, particularly where trafficking was for the purposes of prostitution.
quote:
This excerpt from The War on the White Slave Trade was written by the United States District Attorney in Chicago:quote:
One thing should be made very clear to the girl who comes up to the city, and that is that the ordinary ice cream parlor is very likely to be a spider's web for her entanglement. This is perhaps especially true of those ice cream saloons and fruit stores kept by foreigners. Scores of cases are on record where young girls have taken their first step towards "white slavery" in places of this character

It’s almost as if they aren’t familiar with Charlie Chaplin and his legal travails.

i'm mainly laughing at how assertive that comment is. it would be a lot funnier if that mindset wasn't very scary overall

We have a thread full of supposed non-progressives pushing the sex trafficking narrative along partisan lines as well as folks like cernovich and Alex jones.

oh i tried fighting the good fight after that last national bust had misleading headlines and mostly normal prostitutes getting included to make the numbers seem bigger. sex trafficking is the new moral panic and that NPR quote just symbolizes the mindset ("we need new laws to show we care about negative behaviors that are already illegal!")

What would Frank Sobotka say to this

I saw a link to that story and after skimming it, figured it was bullshite and apparently it is.
Just because you’re a hooker, doesn’t mean you can start killing people.

Kony 2012

the best part about Kony 2012 isn't that the crisis was basically over when it became a national trend, but that the creator went fricking CRAZY after he got too famous and couldn't handle it

well the article does have some legit points about how rampant sexual abuse is with our criminal class
however, even then, the people pushing that narrative keep the sexual abuse in some vague nexus of generality to avoid talking about how the lower class has a major sexual abuse problem, saving the story for when it's a white male who victimizes the kid
then, on top of it, the author creates a fake crisis by claiming that (a) federal laws on human trafficking are new and (b) it took until the mid 2010s for fedgov to understand Americans were being trafficked. both are outright lies, b/c there has already been a crime for interstate trafficking since 1910
this is one of those classic "they don't want a discussion" situations, b/c even though they claim it, they warp the structure of the possible conversation so badly that no actual conversation can be had
