ESRB defends “fun” loot boxes as it starts labeling all “in-game purchases”

They are getting blasted but it won't matter. I don't know why people are acting surprised they did absolutely nothing, of course they took the money.

The Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) today announced that all physical, boxed games that contain in-game purchases will include a label notifying purchasers of that fact "in the near future." The new program expands on a similar "digital purchases" label that already appears alongside the ratings for exclusively downloadable games that appear on some digital storefronts.

I don't have a problem with loot boxes when it comes to cosmetic items as long as it is possible to get those same items some other way through the game. Loot boxes for anything that actually improves a person's gear and/or stats need to be done away with.

With the stipulation that they can be acquired within a reasonable amount of time of regular gameplay.
Also, ideally, they'd minimize duplicates or at least fairly compensate for them with the option to then buy specific items with whatever saved up currency.

Was anyone actually expecting them to get rid of loot boxes?

You could even delete the bold part. Have all the expensive skins you want, but don't make games pay to win.

This. I don't care if someone has a unique skin for a gun. I've bought some of that type of stuff before.
I hate the idea of some spoiled 12 year old being able to dominate a game because he has better gear than everyone else due to his mom's credit card.

I would agree that cosmetic loot boxes are the most tolerable kind of loot box, but even then time and resources are devoted to items you'll be asked to spend real money on as opposed to things that come with the base game.
It also never fails that the cosmetic items tend to look far better than the items that come in the base game.
MMORPGs like SW:TOR and STO are notorious for this.

What? You mean to say it's not fun to play for 50 hours before you get to be Luke and then another 100 to be Vader?

The ESRB's move comes as multiple state legislatures have begun looking into regulation of the randomized in-game purchases known as loot boxes. Earlier this month, Senator Maggie Hassan (D-N.H.) sent an open letter to the ESRB to examine whether games with loot boxes are being marketed "in an ethical and transparent way that adequately protects the developing minds of young children from predatory practices." Hassan said at the time that Federal Trade Commission action may be necessary if the game industry does not take steps on this issue
Yay more Gov control and regulation! Just what we need!

I agree, that's why I said they should still be available in game, within a reasonable amount of gameplay to get. There should always be some type of in-game experience/currency exchange or something so that you can use your work to purchase an item.

quote:I don't know if it's passed yet and if it will apply for loot boxes, but gachas are soon going to be legally obligated to release their pull-rates to the public. It's already that way in Japan where they tell you exactly what the % of pulling each item is. Should go a long way towards clarity in this type of system.

I mean, without regulations, EA's and other distributors revenue structure would be built on pay to win.

The gamers are 2 blame, paying for DLC, which was already in the game, but taken out for purchase later.
The best was when retards paid for DLC of maps, from older games, that they already paid for in the older game.
Gamers are suckers, and loot boxes and skins were the 100% factual proof. Companies couldn't believe how dumb the community was, their fallacy was pushing it 2 far.

Loot boxes suck no matter what, but they really are nothing more than slot machines. If you could simply pay for the cosmetic item you wanted that is fine. Rolling the dice to MAYBE get what you want is gambling and I have serious reservations about that.
I know I have had some experiences with loot boxes that I'm not proud of. I can't imagine the number of parents shocked at their CC bills when their kids get hooked on loot boxes.
Simple fact. They are evil and companies KNOW for a fact that all people and kids included will spend a lot more on loot boxes than straight purchases.
They are nothing more than games with Casinos attached and should be treated as such by the Feds.
