When did all 12-13 year olds become entitled to full-fledged smartphones with unfettered access to the internet?

I can’t be the only one that thinks this is insane

I feel like things have gotten out of hand ????

I drank water from a garden hose as a kid and lived to tell about it.

What scares me is I know what I was doing in my mid teens. If I had a smartphone...I don’t even want to think about what my kids might do

I gave my 13 year old academic goals she needed to achieve before we allowed her to have one. She accomplished them and earned it. There are rules that she must abide by and one of them is that at a certain time phone access is suspended for the night and the phone isn't allowed to charge over night in her room. It charges in my bedroom. She also isn't allowed to have any social media accounts. There are other rules and she knows the consequences if she doesn't follow them.

My kids will have flip phones at most until they are in high school. The penetration of social media into every aspect of teenagers' lives is toxic.

Back in my day we had to show each other our penises in person. Like gentlemen.

Thanks, but it's not needed. I don't give empty threats when it comes to disciplining my kids. I set the rules and consequences and it's up to them if they choose to break the rules and want to suffer the consequences. I've never had many problems with my kids following the rules because they understand up front what will happen if they don't.

I said the same thing, but it’s easier said than done when you have a kid that age with major FOMO telling you they are one of the only one without it, etc

Wow you are the perfect parent and have it all figured out. We are all just jealous of your stoic perfection.

I'm not perfect. Far from it. I make mistakes all the time, but I'm the parent and it's my job to teach my kids how to be responsible. I don't try to be my kids' friend. I'm not their friend. I'm their dad.

I learned most of this shite from how my parents disciplined me as a youth. They gave me a leash and when I didn't abide by whatever rules they set forth I suffered the consequences. There was no negotiating, no arguing, no going back and forth because they told me up front. It worked for me and kept me in line as a kid and now I'm using it on my own kids and it seems to be working thus far. If it stops working, I'll try something else, but for the most part my kids are pretty good with listening and obeying the rules of the house.
