People were talking about Lukaku for a long time. I remember people linking him to all the big clubs in Europe in the spring of the 2009/10 season. Can't believe Chelsea sold him.

There is a post I wrote back in 2001 on a soccer forum about a promising high school basketball player named LeBron James. It's almost as prescient as my selection of XXXTentacion in the 2018 Tigerdroppings Death Pool.

Pretty much every writer knew who LBJ was when he was a junior in a high school lol.

This, while maybe dark, is impressive.

I'm just saying you make it sound like he was a nobody. He was very much a known commodity by the time he signed with Chelsea at 17 and was very quickly thought of as THE up and coming center forward not long after so it's nice that he's broken through his little plateau of form

ETA: excuse me he signed when he was 18. Nonetheless he was still projected to be a superstar. His little stall period going out on loan (thanks a lot Mourinho) doesn't change that

And he chooses a twitter source

I'm sure there's a million people predicting Neymar and Mbappe and Pogba's future success

Lukaku is amazing against weak competition. Not so much against top tier teams/talent.

There are shitloads of "known commodities" at 17 that never amount to anything. Remember Martin Oodegaard, John Bostock or Coulibaly? Or hundreds of other skilled teens that never impressed again?

Martin Oodegaard

Speaking of, it will be interesting what he does next. He had a pretty decent loan spell at Heerenveen.

He’s still under contract at Madrid until 2021, so I wonder if they sell. If they do he’ll almost certainly have a buy back.
