Over the past three years, the percentage of 6- to 12-year-olds playing soccer regularly has dropped nearly 14 percent, to 2.3 million players, according to a study by the Sports & Fitness Industry Association, which has analyzed youth athletic trends for 40 years. The number of children who touched a soccer ball even once during the year, in organized play or otherwise, also has fallen significantly.

With all the kids who have their faces glued to a tablet in public this isn’t surprising. Wouldn’t surprise me if all sports are declining.

Yep.

Between skyrocketing costs, sport specialization and coaches needing training, youth sports is in the midst of a crisis, according to new data published Wednesday by the Sports & Fitness Industry Association and the Aspen Institute.

Even the kids that are playing aren’t playing at the level we were when I was a kid. League ball is terrible. Kids don’t care if they win or lose.

The damn paralegal in my office pays 4/5 grand a year on baseball. I don't even think that takes into account hotel rooms and meals when the games are far from Austin.

frick all that.

Parents ruined team sports. You have to specialize just to keep up with the joneses or your kids are playing with a bunch of booger pickers. I have resisted putting my son on a tournament baseball team as we have good REC leagues but the next year (11&12) is when they allow tournament teams to enter and the teams made up of single entry draftees are terrible, so we are having to cobble together a group of kids with likeminded parents . Did our first tournament two weekends ago and spent 9 hours away from home on a Sunday watching average baseball players with overzealous parents. If everyone would go back to playing a rotation of sports until high school then more kids could stay in it longer and likely have more fun.

The SJW mindset has poisoned youth sports in America.

“It’s ok if you’ve lost all of your tournament games. We are still giving you a small trophy and ribbons for everyone since you showed up. We want to make the kids feel good. Afterwards, we are taking the team for free pizza, and if we have time, we will go to the water park.”

I put the blame on the parents who think they are raising the next superstar athlete instead of just letting their kid have fun.

Cry more please. It wasn’t our generation who gave out participation trophies

I disagree. It would be nice if we got back to it being fun instead of some kind of professional development program.

These parents are ridiculous. If my kid isn't absolutely dominating whatever sport he chooses to play then putting him on a travel team isn't going to do a god damn thing in making him a scholarship or pro athlete.

Almost all those guys showed incredible natural talent well before any of that process needs to be begun. If you don't see it, save your money and put them in the rec league.

There’s no doubt that the parents who raise the golden child are also cursed to ruin teams. At the same time, we need to teach kids how to win and lose. In life, there’s no consolation prize when you don’t get what you want. Rewarding kids for failure will only make matters worse once they get into the real world.

Did I say that? No. I’m just not stupid enough to blame “sjw” for things that were done before your ilk ever came up with that name

Teaching the kids to have fun and enjoy the sport is different than handing out 10th place trophies. In baseball, travel ball is making it harder for college coaches to recruit players because they don’t know how to ride the bench when they get to that level and quit caring. That’s the issue that I have.

My ilk?

Take a look around sports today and see how it’s treated. Who gives a crap when it was done? It’s being done.

You specifically said that kids don’t care if they win or lose. Now, why is that? Who’s teaching them?

Yeah, exactly.
