Grand Isle PSA for the beach.. Wear some shoes in the water

Dont know why but the stingrays are thick in the sand. If you are crabbing or go out passed knee deep where some shoes. Heard of 9 people getting hit and then we had 2 in our group get hit. Was told to soak in hot water if get stuck.

I think that's a good idea regardless of stingrays or not. Right now, the crabs are thick and you'll step on plenty in the surf. That's not to mention the bottles/trash that is likely to be on the bottom...
I'm not sure that shoes will help protect from a stingray sting, don't they typically hit the legs? I guess every bit helps...

Sting rays always get bad in late summer. Not sure why.

Never hurts to learn and do the stingray shuffle while walking in coastal waters.

Shuffle you feet, that makes a lot of vibrations. That usually helps push them away.

I just would not go. I am super scared of them. Like, spider/roach/caterpillar scared of them.

You don't need to look cool on the Grand Isle Beach, baw!

I always wear wading boots when wade fishing. Oyster shells, stumps, broken glass, cans, etc... will open your foot and expose open wound to bacteria or possibly vibrio.
Shoes/boots will not protect against a sting ray though!
The barb will pass through mesh but often times hits higher up on your ankle. You can buy Sting Ray guards from Academy or online. They look like soccer shin guards and will work most of the time.

Those won't always work either. A few years ago, I got popped through my waders, sweat pants, sock and wading boots. Would have been a lot worse without those on though.

They work against cutting your foot open on underwater objects.
Only Ray Guards will prevent sting rays.
That was the point of my post

I shuffle and (always) wear water sandals with closed toe. I have wade fished several times in the GI surf this summer (including a few days last week) and still haven't encountered a ray in surf. But whatever keeps people out of the water while I fish...

If the numbers of people getting hit are as high as the OP says, this is the right answer. I've seen barb wounds that took the better part of a year to heal and involved skin grafts. It's not worth the risk.

Seen two yesterday in the surf

My brother got popped on the inside of his foot saturday. I thought it might have been a hard head but the ray makes more sense. He did say the hot water made it feel better

I was at the state park beach Sunday and didn’t see any rays. Bunch of people in the water and didn’t hear about any stings. Glad cause my kids thought they were at the neighborhood pool.

If you want a good pair of shoes to wear in the yak you need to get you some Astral shoes. They make a really good fishing shoe.
