Decent game. Fantastic soundtrack

It was a great homoerotic hack and slash

It gets more hate than it should.
13 does as well

The linearity of 13 kills what could of been a great game.

For 15, I'm not sure about "more than it should." It's a really bad Final Fantasy game. In some ways, I actually think it's worse than FF13.
Final Fantasy is a franchise that used to be a big freaking deal. Every game in the franchise was one a console's best titles.
SquareEnix knows the west loves (loved?) Final Fantasy. After they released 10, they seemed to be trying to tweak the formula to appeal more to western gamers. I suppose you could go back as far as FF12 for when the franchise started to go off the rails, but FF13 despite being well made, beautiful to look at and amazing to listen to, was linear as all hell, barely an RPG, and had a near incomprehensible story. Other than the direction of the game being misguided and the story lacking context, I have no issues with it.
FFXV on the other hand, we all know its troubled development. Originally, it was not even supposed to be a mainline Final Fantasy title, and to be honest, it never should have been in the first place. It doesn't play like a Final Fantasy game at all and is pretty damn short for a JRPG. People would be a lot less harsh on the game if it wasn't even related to the franchise.
The open world is really devoid of fun things to do outside of monster hunts. Traversing the world is annoying as hell and highlights how empty it is. A huge amount of time is spent on auto-pilot, navigating from one area to another via an on-rails vehicle that might as well function as an interactive loading screen.
The sidequests that exist throughout the world are boring fetch quests at best and terrible at worst (catching frogs?). It doesn't help matters than the unimportant NPCs look like they're from Sonic 06.
The much touted "open world" is pretty blink and you'll miss it unless you're taking your time. The story moves along at an extremely fast pace, and you could easily bypass that point in the story with less than 10 hours played.
Speaking of the story, it's everything we didn't like about FF13 magnified by 100. Your party members have no development (outside of one convenient reveal that lets you hack a locked door). There is no context to the events of the gameworld. SquareEnix has expected players to consume all of the side-media surrounding the game such as the anime and CG movie in order to have the first clue what is going on. Here's a game though that unlike FF13 wasn't finished when it shipped, meaning characters appear in the story then are randomly never seen again, plot threads come up then are dropped without explanation, and things happen to characters in the story who are barely even in the game. It's not as bad as the final hours of KOTOR II, but it's literally have the game.
Everything after Chapter 10 is linear. 3-4 chapters of the game literally take place as an extended action scene (an admittedly cool one) on a damn train.
I won't say 15 has killed Final Fantasy but 15 was not the game the franchise needed after all the backlash 13 received.
It is bizarre to me how SquareEnix can knock it out of the park with Dragon Quest but seems so lost and confused with where to take Final Fantasy.

Might be the least memorable game I’ve ever beat.
I just remember the villain being pretty cool.

Did you watch the movie and the short anime series before playing? They came out before the game and gave you a little insight to the plot before playing.

Why wasn't it all just part of the game?

They tried to patch some of the movie in as cutscenes in the beginning. That made it in a few days after release I think?
But yeah, would have been better to not have been so focused on having a universe. Game would have benefited from having more direct focus, but that's why they changed directors in the first place. Game wasn't going anywhere before Tabata took over.

This is the part that a lot of people I know can't understand.
It's a decent game, if it wasn't called Final Fantasy I think I would like it a lot more. It just sounds stupid, I know, but there are just certain expectations that come with an FF Game and this game did not come close to meeting them.
Also, I agree with the rest of your post 100%. I like 13 a lot other than the hallways/lack of cities or exploration ... also not a fan of the story. But it has good combat. I feel like 12 was where they lost their way though. 6-10 was such a good run.

During the game itself I didn't feel much of a connection to any of the main characters (or any of the random people it threw at you who had no backstory and somehow you were expected to feel for them).
But for some reason I couldn't help but tear up at the end the night before the final battle.

I feel like this is kinda contradictory.
While the decision to only have 4 party members got a lot of criticism, they were really able to develop each character pretty well. All of the fun interactions between them made each seem like vital part of the game.

The story had so much potential...but broken up in so many ways..killed it. The game was rushed and incomplete. The big but bland open world, character DLC, movie, simple repeating quest, lack of towns, tell us the game was announced over a decade ago but was only worked on for what 3 years due to all the issues. They should have taken more time with it.
The only thing I liked about it was Ardyn and he wasn't in it near enough. He had such an intriguing backstory that was not touched on enough for me. I feel like SE has gotten away from that Villain aspect since Kuja in 9. And I feel that Aspect is really Needed in the game.

I played it before all of the fixes and still enjoyed it.
A lot of FF fanboys HATED it though
It’s an above average game, IMO, nothing spectacular though.

In game, all I gathered was that he had the same last name as the main character

Which is sad on SE's part because the potential was there.

Uh, really? I mean, his character motivations and history are all contained in the game. As he was an excellent villain, I do hope that you caught onto more. In Chapter 13, did you rush through the end, because there is a lot of explanation about Ardyn and the Empire in there.
