What is a an opinion in the gaming world that you share that is against the grain?

I’ll start:
Final Fantasy 12 is terrible and one of the worst ones they ever made.
The automatic battle system sucks arse.

Games of the modern era should be challenging but not oppressively so. The purpose of playing a video game should not be to experience and overcome challenge but to experience a story and explore a world through an interactive medium.

I disagree.
Modern games have become an interactive movie instead of a video game.
Not sure why or how story became the most important aspect of a video game but it happened. Probably graphics. Nothing wrong with an interactive movie but I would rather a game that focuses on challenge and gameplay.
Story is good but give me awesome gameplay over story any day of the week.

Story is very important to me. I don't know if I'd say it's the most important element. The majority of games this generation have had really underwhelming stories.
A game having good gameplay though doesn't have to mean that it's overly difficult to play.
Some level of challenge invests you in the game world. The games suffer if they become too easy or too difficult.

Most sports games are overly complicated. Online shooters aren't fun.

Absolutely any game is fun if you're playing with friends
What I mean is that the mechanics for multiplayer games aren't that important. any random FPS on steam that looks like it was created by 3 people can be just as fun as COD as long as you're playing with your homies

Suikoden 4 is one of the better games in the series

maybe I'm old here, 36, but I dont play video games for a story, I play them to play a game, a challenge, to defeat an obstacle.
growing up beating a game meant something, I had a challenge in front of me and I defeated it.
Now you just basically play an interactive movie, all your doing is getting to the next scene, not sure that's an ideal scenario to me when playing a video game. Dont get me wrong, I've played a ton of these games and enjoyed them, but sometimes I wonder if I'm actually playing a game and not just playing to get to the next scene.
Zelda probably nailed the mix to me the best, Zelda has a good story with incredible gameplay.
I watch a movie for a story.

Hideo Kojima is overrated.

The Last of Us ended perfectly, and I have no desire to continue the story with a sequel.

I was very disappointed when I finally played Chrono Trigger. I had heard it was the greatest JRPG of all time, but it felt really dumbed down by comparison to Final Fantasy VI.

I didn’t like Chrono Trigger either. Chrono Cross was so much more lovable and aesthetically pleasing.

My sort of hot take is that Final Fantasy 12 (especially The Zodiac Age version) has the best combination of battle systems and music of any FF game. I replayed 9 and beat 12 for the first time recently, and it struck me how much more I enjoyed the minute to minute gameplay in 12.
The problem with that game is that the story just becomes a disaster zone somewhere around the mid point of the game. Almost incomprehensible. There are also a few terrible fetch quests thrown in later.
Although most FF stories are ok at best.
