Assuming a house is in a great location, awesome outdoor area/yard, interior is laid out well, and nice appliances/fixtures/etc...how small is too small for a family of 4?

Does anyone live in a small house and think it’s not a big deal?

Our first house was 1390 sq ft for a family of 4. Wasn't a big deal for us.

I like some of them tiny homes, but only if there's plenty of land.

My grandfather grew up the oldest of 8. During the depression they lived in a 2 room clapboard house.

You make do with what you can

For four ... 2500 sq ft.

I'm pretty spoiled though.

I feel like I could be fine with 1800 square feet. My current house is 2200 square feet, but it’s laid out terribly and has lots of wasted space.

I could do about 1200 if I had a 5,000 sq ft garage.

Kids moved out. Our retirement house is 1200 square foot 2 bedroom 1 bath in a great location with a great layout. Not much to clean and super comfortable.

Wife and I lived in a 1500ish sf home and it would have been workable for 3. Better use of space and a hundred more and it would work for 4. This is in town in a large city, so I wouldn't do that in the burbs, mind you.

Depends on the family relationship.

If you MUST do it, then a 1500-2000 SQ/FT house, 3 bed 2 bath could be done. But it won’t be fair to the kids as they grow up and get older. They will want some privacy and not have to share a bathroom

I could do 1000 easy except for one thing.

Most days it’s more than you need. But I love to cook and have people over. A house that small just won’t work for entertaining.

With no kids and a decent outdoor patio with a good cooking setup, I would be good with be good with around than 800.

10x10 bathroom
11x11 bedroom
8x8 closet
10x12 kitchen
14x14 living room (could probably go smaller)
10x10 pantry
5x5 extra storage
6x8 optional spare/guest bath

A family of four could probably do okay in a 1,500 sq ft house.

General formula for comfort: 600sqft per person in the home.

This is not a requirement, nor is it impossible to have less space. This is for maximum comfort.

Our daughter is 5 and my wife and o are already talking about this. We can’t wait to be in a condo or small home with less to clean.
