Rule Check: England PK penalty

I am watching the replay of the game today because I was at work.
On the Saurbrunn penalty, does it matter if the player was WAY offsides on the play? Seems the rule would allow for that. If there was no foul and White scored the goal she would have been offsides right?
Why award a PK and issue the yellow if the goal would have been disallowed?
Anyone have a clip of that offsides line?

She was onside. No fewer than 2 players were keeping her onside (maybe 3).
The LB and LCB definitely kept her on.

i see what you mean. when the switch pass happened from the center to the left side of the box she was offsides. however, she slowed down and was behind the player who passed to her; with that touch, she was played onside, and there were also defenders who dropped deeper than her position at that point. had she interfered with anything prior to that pass to her, she would have been considered offsides.

She was onside after the pass, but that was not a penalty.

but that was not a penalty.

Why not? Contact was made. It seemed odd that the England player would whiff an easy put away like that. There’s no reason to flop either.

First time we’ve ever agreed

I found a screenshot...
I guess the angle I saw on TV only showed the 3 defenders.
I couldn’t see the defender on the pass that kept her onside. Very close.

One defender kept the player on the final pass onside (the defender that was challenging the passer), but that doesn't matter since she was behind the ball.

Back to the original question:
If she had been offsides and was fouled from behind like this before the offsides touch is it still a penalty? Or can the ref “assume” the offsides?

If she had been offside, there would be no penalty regardless of whether she was fouled or not.
They would have also no given Sauerbraun the yellow card.

They wouldn't have given her one on that play, but (since we're talking about hypotheticals) they can still give a card for fouling an offside player depending on what the defender did.

I'd say her back-kick is what initiated the contact with the defender.

Not at all.

Yeah, I was team no pen on first glance, but after watching the replay, it's 100% a pen...
Live it looked like a terrible (like yellow card terrible) dive, but this is what VAR is for, because subtle little contact like that can be missed and have MASSIVE impacts on a match (granted not in this case because the PK taker shite the bed)

Dude you can't be offside when you're behind the ball. There didn't have to be any defenders down there if the ball is passed back to her like it is here.
