Where did it all go wrong for the Cubs?

If we go back to October of 2016, it looked like the Cubs were about to go on a late 90s Yankees run. And here we are, every year since has been a step back, people are calling for Maddon go be fired, and last night was one of the most brutal losses I can remember. On top of this, they may not win the division for the 2nd straight year
What happened? Baseball is baseball but it seems like everything that could go wrong, has gone wrong over the last three years

They are paying Darvish and Tyler Chatwood like 33m combined this year
And paid them the same last year I believe

It was always something different popping up. When the hitting was doing well, the pitching sucked and vice versa.
Injuries have hampered 1 star at a time, but at different times,so someone always had to pick up slack.
Addison Russell now sucks and is in AAA. Tyler Chatwood is wearing a major league jersey.
Combine that with having to play the Brewers and Cardinals a ton and this is what we're left with.

Also Heyward is having a nice year but that’s still not a great use of a lot of money IMO overall

They have higher expectations and greater hype because they're one of MLB's 3 most popular teams.

From what I’ve seen this year there’s definitely still hope for Darvish to get right. Overall the Cubs are still in a great spot, most clubs would kill to have the core they have. I just feel like they’ve made a few bad deals in FA that’s limited their flexibility and put a ceiling on what they can accomplish currently.

Hes been pitching really well, I just worry about the deal going forward. But if he continues to keep pitching this way the Cubs are looking really good to win the division

Chatwood is the worst. He's getting paid like 13.5 to be completely unplayable.
Yu's deal is pretty bad but he's shown flashes that he still has great stuff.
He just collapses mentally when one bad thing happens.
