So i was reading the latest edition of Golf magazine about this topic and they have the setup of the top SG approach the green leaders

#1 Tyrrell Hatton Ping i210 4-PW, the entire set is CB, the best player on tour with iron play

Rory mixed
Cantlay CB
JT mixed
Paul Casedy mixed

only 4 of the top 10 had all blade bags

29 of the top 40 are mixed or full CB irons

As someone who is fairly new to golf, I was shocked how many players considered vanity when selecting clubs. I'd here shite like "Oh I don't like the way that club looks". I learned that blades were cool and CB were for hacks. Seems like that has changed on tour at least.

Even the "blades" most of these guys use aren't the butter knives most people think of.

I personally prefer a modern blade than a GI. I feel like I know exactly on the face where I hit it. Personal preference.

I hear this all the time on here. I have never thought damn my club looks pretty. I just care how I hit the ball.

Would you rather know the more precise location of your miss hit or have a more forgiving miss hit?

I get some people have played blades forever and just don't want to switch.

Would you rather hit it flush and fly 15 yards further than normal mishits? To each his own. I prefer being short but in the fairway on mishits than being long and in the shite.

Huh? Mishits on a blade are going to be shorter as compared to stock distance than a misfit with a CB.

You arent going to be long on a mishit with any iron.

Know where I hit the ball. I currently play forged Srixons. Ive had CB GI irons(I quit playing for about 10 years all together and tried to start back), and played blades when I was younger and could devote all my time to playing. Not having a good feel of the golf ball was not helping my game. Maybe its just what you're used to.

Not all CB are GI, the last CB clubs have pretty good feedback, titelst for example has 3 levels of CB clubs.

I am aware - I just responded to a question you asked.

On a related topic, I saw a video about Tiger and his putter choices. He went to Titleist and tried out 3 putters they had designed. When he got done he said he liked the heavy one and they told him they were all exactly the same weight. He responded, No - the 2nd one is heavier. They reweighed them and it was a like .01 grams heavier than the others....I forget the difference but it was barely measurable.

Can you explain to me what that story has to do with anything being discussed?

I'm a 5 handicap and play blades from 2001. Nothing super recent, so I'm not in the "my blades are actually forgiving" category.

I got them cheap just to see if I could play them and I love the way I hit them. If I don't hit it pure, I definitely lose yardage and I definitely need to go to some CBs, but the feeling of a well struck blade is unmatched. I've heard the feeling of hitting a blade pure described as "better than sex." I'm not going to disagree.

The pros' recent set ups was part of the reason I switched. I went back and forth for about fifteen years between true blades and forged irons with a small cavity (think like a Cleveland TA3 or something) throughout the whole set.

I went with the 718 AP2's 5 - PW and the 718 AP3's for the 3I and 4I for my most recent set and have been thinking about getting the 5I for certain courses. It's been a godsend.

From what I've observed, the pros are:
- Obviously, a good bit more carry (like nearly a full club sometimes)
- Also obviously, much, much more forgiving
- Better ball flight off the club face - my long iron shots are like rifle shots now
- More options on tight short and mid-range par 4's - I don't feel like I have to stripe my 3 iron to position myself well and can just smooth out a 4 iron or whatever and it will typically be in a good spot because I can hit that club a pretty long fricking way with a lot of carry now
- On reachable par 5's, the 3I and 4I are realistic options more often now
- They really do get through the rough pretty damn smoothly - much better than I was expecting

The cons:
- The biggest one is dealing with jumpy lies out of the secondary cut and the rough - as an example, I am typically in the 215 - 218 or so carry range with the 4 iron, and I had a downwind 2nd shot from about 230 or so into a par 5 earlier this week from the second cut - very jumpy lie, and I figured club down on the wind; I smoked it, carried it clear over the bunker on the backside of the green and one-hopped OB - that kind of shite will happen at least once a round to me with the long irons and actually happened twice again today both on longish punch shots from the rough into the wind where I smoked it and it carried the green quite cleanly and I had 30 yard pitch shots coming back
- The other big one is the enforced draw on the offset for the AP3s and most any GI CB iron; I naturally play a draw, and the offset will exacerbate any left misses I have, especially with this wind we get up here in the Chicago area
- It's tough to shape recovery shots; actively shaping a normal long iron from the fairway or the tee isn't really necessary for the vast, vast majority of amateurs even including most scratch players, but many do need to shape a lot of recovery shots, and it's definitely more difficult with a GI CB iron than it is with a forged iron, especially shaping it left to right for a right-handed player

On balance, it's definitely been worth it, and I am 1000% happy I made the switch. I oscillate in the 5 - 10 range right now but have been as low as +1.5 at times in my golfing life. Just my opinion but I wouldn't play blades throughout the whole set any longer unless I was good enough to at least be playing in competitive local and state amateur events.

What would really bother you about my set is that I actually go in and bend mine super weak compared to new loft standards. I still carry a 48 degree wedge and go down on 4 degree increments. I’m 6’4 and play standard length and lie too but I have long arms.
