Budgeting for flights to Australia?

Took the family to France for the Women's World Cup in 2019.
We had a great time - so much so that we decided to do the WWC every four years and use that as an excuse to travel abroad.
The next one is 2023, in Australia/New Zealand.
I'm trying to figure out how much to budget for those flights (per person), where is the best place to fly out of (I assume we HAVE to leave from the West Coast) and generally - anything else I need to think about as I start sketching out a plan.
I went and looked at flights recently, but figured CoVID limitations may be skewing the prices and availability of what I was seeing.

Qantas has direct flight from Dallas - 17 hours. At least they did pre-COVID

Nice, thanks.
I figured "least amount of time on the plane" was the best approach, but I guess there's not a huge difference between 15 and 17 hours at that point.

Our son lives in Australia. I think that if we can find tickets for $1500/each we are happy. We have found them for $1300 but that was years ago.

I'm not sure how you could possibly budget for 2023 international flights right now other then going extremely high. Id have to reasonably budget at least 25% over what they are today.

My hope is that it's semi-back to normal by 2023.
I have no gauge for what normal is, though - hence why I asked.
I was hoping someone who had been can chime in.
I don't necessarily CARE what it is - we're going either way. But, I'd still rather avoid sticker shock if I can.

I'm supposed to go spend a month in Australia in September, not sure it's going to happen but I've been looking at fares. What I'm leaning towards is flying to LAX on US domestic, then catching Cathay Pacific to Perth and back from Sydney. Flights connect through Hong Kong. Cathay Pacific has a Premium Economy section that sounds pretty good. One less seat per row, and more recline. Something between Business and Economy. Fares from LAX were around $1,500 RT the last I looked. And a Hong Kong stopover is allowed, I plan to spend a few days with that as well.

It depends on where you are positioned. Leaving from Dallas saves connecting flight + layover.
I flew DFW-SYD before covid. Its on an A380, which is a double decker plane. The best flying experience ever. Very smooth, no turbulence. And Qantas is a great airline.
Our friends that came with us paid ~1200 per person for the flight but it did go on sale for as little as $760 per person round trip...they procrastinated too long and missed the one day sale.

I went to NZ 5 years ago. Flew HOU-AUK direct on Air New Zealand. Tickets cost around $2100 round trip.

Thanks for all of these. I expected around $2000 per, but might be able to get in cheaper.
Also good to know there are other direct options (or WERE) and not just the west coast flights. Might be really helpful to fly back to Houston or Dallas, as I assume we'll be pretty tired of flying by that point.
We'll likely have multiple stops so maybe flying into Sydney and out of Auckland (or whatever) will work.
It's way too far out to make an actual plan now - but we think we want to fly direct rather than spending a day somewhere (like Hong Kong.)

I’m hoping to go in December. Hawaiian airlines routes you through Hawaii sometimes with a 24 hr layover.

I did it years ago. We flew St. Louis to Los Angeles then to Sydney then to Cairns when we went.
I think it was around $1500 then.

Cairns and Fraser Island offroading were our favorite stops on our Easter Australia trip.

We have made the trip twice in the last 7 years. MSY-LAX-MEL. Spent a week in MEL both times then MEL-SYD once and the second trip MEL-AKL.
Never on Quantas, that plane has too many people. I prefer the dreamliner (787-10).

Ten years ago wife and I flew to Perth right after Christmas to see her sisters family. It was $5k round trip and we had to go through Russia and Singapore. My first time overseas and it was 30 hours until we got to Perth. Singapore airlines is awesome though.
