Scholastic pulls children's book from 'Captain Underpants' author over 'harmful racial stereotypes and passively racist imagery'
quote:
"Together, we recognize that this book perpetuates passive racism," the publishing house said in a statement on their website. "We are deeply sorry for this serious mistake. Scholastic has removed the book from our websites, stopped fulfillment of any orders (domestically or abroad), contacted our retail partners to explain why this book is no longer available and sought a return of all inventory."
quote:
Pilkey initially said the book, which tells the story of a group of friends who use martial arts and Chinese philosophy to save the world, was created to “showcase diversity, equality and non-violent conflict resolution.” However, he now sees the harm
quote:
"I hope that you, my readers, will forgive me, and learn from my mistake that even unintentional and passive stereotypes and racism is harmful to everyone," wrote Pilkey. "I apologize, and I pledge to do better." The decision to remove Pilkey's book comes shortly after the announcement that Dr. Seuss Enterprises will stop the publication and licensing of six Dr. Seuss titles which "portray people in ways that are hurtful and wrong."

When will the REDS realize that the publishers are only doing this to sell more books that they’re ‘canceling’?

The world is much safer now.

Meanwhile you can be explicitly and virulently racist, as long as it’s about white people.
Or just non-progs in general. We’ve all seen how they call black and Hispanic conservatives every slur in the book.
Or you can be openly racist as long as you are on the left

God dammit. I loved those books as a kid. I read every one multiple times. I saw them in the store a few years ago and was shocked they still were being made. I sold little fliporamas that I made myself that were in the books. You flip the pages back and forth and it simulates motion.
ETA: so it isn’t the whole series. Just one book. But that’s where it starts. Just one book.
Eta2: are we in a place where authors and actors can only portray people exactly like them? And we can’t blend and fuse and exaggerate and twist for the sake of art?

It may still be pointless virtue signaling, but just to clarify, it's not Captain Underpants being pulled:
quote:
Last week, children's publisher Scholastic announced they will no longer distribute Pilkey's 2010 graphic novel, The Adventures of Ook and Gluk: Kung-Fu Cavemen from the Future.

Is the problem that they are kung fu cavemen?
I don’t get it...

My 7-year-old son checked that book out from his school library about a month ago. He loved it!
Guess he’s a racist piece of garbage now.

Ehh its a fairly inaccurate depiction of Chinese culture. Now if Ook and Gluk had engineered a bio weapon to destroy the world and used communist Propaganda to cover it up, it would have been more on point.

Why was that "children's book" even published?
Seems like normalizing pedophilia on face value.

Apologizing seems like the worst thing you can do in these scenarios.

Well looks like Scholastic is all about supporting the left and the progs who are bringing down the country. What a fricking joke.
