Realtor coming Sunday to start the process of selling my home and two rental properties. All three kids are gone, two in military and one In college away. My wife and I are in mid forties and healthy. I work offshore 21 and 21. The plans are to buy a new diesel and a top of the line 5th wheel and head west the north. My investing has done well and house will sell for quite a more than owed. We figured we should do this before all the shite comes crashing down and we’re able. We might even find a new place to call home!

Tired of talking about it man! May regret it or not. But the money put in and out will be accounted for and haven’t been out of the arm pit that Louisiana is. Proud of where I’m from and my heritage here and the coonass ways, but it’s time to go!!! Once we’ll start our trek, I’ll hopefully be able to keep updates for you guys. I see this happening by end of summer!

Traveling in between 21 day hitches I’ll fly from the nearest airport that we’re at during that time to NOLA then go offshore and the same coming back in. I’m reimbursed for my travels. My wife can work from the 5th wheel and from her laptop. I’ll just have to plan for her a safe place and accessibility to things while I’m gone. We will also be pulling a Jeep.

I think you’re doing the right thing.

I’m retired and a big regret is not traveling more when younger. We’ve made some good trips in the past 5 years but as not many as we wanted to or should have. Hope to make up for lost time this year though.

I look forward to your future post on the travel board.

I've seen/read this too many times over the past few years and decided that I won't be saying this in the future.

Easier said that done after a certain point in life. Wives, kids, jobs, mortgages get in the way. Don't know how you actually pull that off when it takes money and time to do.

Thinking back on my life, I feel like I was able to travel a fair amount before life got me. Before going to grad school, I worked for 2 years, then quit to go over to Europe to try to "win back" a girl I'd dated for 4 years in college who was in school there. We traveled for 2 weeks, then I took off on my own. Back packed for 3 months on my own, occasionally traveling with some other fellow nomad types.

Side Note: You know the weirdest feeling I have felt when it comes to travel, was the feeling that I had all the time and money in the world. I did the hostel type, on the cheap style of travel, but literally I had nothing to pull me back home. Plenty of money based on the needs and time. Could have gone on for ever so to speak.

The "lesson learned" I guess is I had enough money saved up, no real ties like families/jobs/school and took advantage of it. Scary thought to just go out on your own like that but in retrospect it was a great opportunity.

We only started traveling again in the past 5 years now that the kids are on their own. Feel like we still have a lot of gas in the tank. Not sure I'd quit work since the money's good and I get 6 weeks off a year. Plenty of time to still travel. And we will now that we're vaccinated and planning more European adventures.

This is awesome. I hope Updates continue..

West is pretty easy to get lost (meaning plenty to see and out in the open), where as the east is definitely more congested.

Always wanted to hit up the NE and Maine...that would be an interesting starting point while its still warm etc...Could plan to watch the leaves change, then work your way across the country. End up on the west coast for the winter months..

this will be fun to hear play out

Congrats!

congrats on actually pulling the trigger and not wishing on it the rest of your life. just curious, what kind of fifth wheel are you going to get. Have you looked into the DRV Line (Mobile Suites & Full House)? oh, and buy slightly used. haha

All good points and I am doing a bit of Monday morning quarterbacking. In our situation it's more of a case of knowing what I know now I realize we could have spent more on travel and it would not have materially affected our retirement income.

My regrets are not visiting the great National Parks sooner (we took a 3 week road trip to YS, G. Teton, RMNP, etc in 2019 - which drove home that thought) and not taking a few trips to Europe pre retirement. We did go in 2018.

As we get older "the gas in the tank" is getting lower and 2020 was a road block that consumed a lot of gas without any progress forward. Neither of us had COVID but physically and emotionally 2020 was a gas guzzler, especially for my wife.

We're also vaccinated and have two trips planned this year but not to Europe yet.

Why not make up for lost time and just move to Europe for a few months? Live in Italy or something. My vote would be Slovenia of course.
